Now Hiring Student Peer Mentors with Backgrounds in Science, Technology and Math

STEM Peer Mentors are successful, outgoing, and caring students who have taken science, technology and/or math who want to help new students succeed, adjust and thrive as part of a community of learners! A rewarding job that looks GREAT on your transcript and resume!

What does a STEM Peer Mentor Do?

  1. Assists STEM or potential STEM students in understanding, adapting to and succeeding in STEM courses and degrees;
  2. Offers personal insights on college success based on experience and knowledge of Kauai CC;
  3. Shares information about resources and events at Kauai CC;
  4. Listens well and shares feedback and encouragement with mentees regularly;
  5. Attends training, as required; and
  6. Communicates with supervisor regarding the status of mentored students.

What is the location and schedule of a STEM Peer Mentor?

  • Location: Kauai Community College;
  • Duration of work: Fall 2014 semester with option to extend into Spring 2015;
  • Number of Openings: 2;
  • Pay rate: $10/hr.;
  • Minimum Work Hours: 3hrs/week;
  • Maximum Work Hours: 20hrs/week; and
  • Work Schedule: Flexible, but generally weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

You are Eligible to Become a STEM Peer Mentor if you:

  1. Completed at least one year of studies in STEM disciplines at Kaua'i Community College with a GPA of at least 3.0;
  2. Are enrolled at least half-time (6 credits) for the semester;
  3. Are an enthusiastic student with good verbal and communication skills;
  4. Are familiar with the student perspective;
  5. Are dependable, honest, and punctual; and
  6. Respect confidentiality of peers.

How to apply to become a STEM Peer Mentor

  1. Log-in to SECE and apply for the STEM Peer Mentor posting, get a reference #; and
  2. Submit your résumé and reference # to KCC’s STEM Coordinator Andrea Erichsen, OSC 206-H, phone: 245-8378. She will contact you to schedule an interview!

Experience Global Perspectives and Ethnomathematics (2/21)

Please come and enjoy a fascinating talk by Linda Furuto, Ph.D. of UH Manoa this Friday afternoon.The title of her talk is "Ethnomathematics on a Worldwide Voyage: Culturally Responsive Curriculum to College, Career, and Community Readiness."

Dr. Linda Furuto is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Prior to joining the UHM 'Ohana, Dr. Furuto was an Associate Professor of Mathematics, Head of Mathematics and Science, and Founder of the Mathematics Center at the University of Hawai'i - West O'ahu. Dr. Furuto completed her Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles, master's degree at Harvard University, and bachelor's degree at BYU. Research Interests include quantitative research methodology, ethnomathematics, educational policy analysis, and access and equity.

Defined as the intersection of culture, historical traditions, sociocultural roots, and mathematics, ethnomathematics encourages the investigation and adaptation of these concepts within and outside of the classroom. The goal is to advance a coordinated effort focused on the needs of culturally diverse earners, with the aim of informing research and deepening practice for teachers and leaders who work in these contexts leading to college, career, and community readiness. We strive to acknowledge existing cultural systems and practices; deepen pathways that foster student engagement through physical, environmental, cultural connectedness; and foster an ongoing process of wayfinding in local, national, and global contexts.

Professional development credit will be provided for attendees.

Now Hiring - Part-time STEM embedded tutors and peer-mentor "scholars" for fall 2013

Embedded Tutors for Science Technology Engineering & Math (STEM) 
Embedded Tutors are KCC students who have excelled in STEM courses and who wish to facilitate positive and productive learning sessions that support the academic success of fellow KCC students who are interested in STEM fields.

What does an embedded STEM tutor do?
  • Embedded tutors must attend at least one class session for the class to which they are assigned. In addition, they must provided at least two hours of tutoring outside class, be available by appointment for tutoring/sessions, and attend meetings and training sessions;
  • Communicates courteously, professionally and responsively; 
  • Organizes and/or leads tutoring sessions for review/test taking purposes;
  • Commits to a team approach and works with instructors and supervisory staff; and
  • Maintains confidentiality, collects data, and keeps necessary records.
Peer Scholar (Mentor) for Science Technology Engineering & Math (STEM)
STEM Peer Mentors are KCC students interested in STEM fields who want to share their knowledge of STEM and the KCC Campus with their peers to form a sense of community.

What does a STEM peer mentor do?
  • Assists STEM or potential STEM students in understanding and adapting to STEM course requirements;
  • Offers insights on college success based on experience and knowledge of KCC;
  • Shares information about resources and events at KCC;
  • Attends training, as required;
  • Participates as a member of the KCC mentoring “team”; and
  • Communicates with supervisor regarding the status of mentored students.
