College Conversation about ISLOs March 23
Aloha!
In preparation for our reaccreditation visit, the Assessment Committee--with representation from all divisions and units--has been reviewing Kaua'i Community College's Institutional Student Learning Outcomes (ISLOs) since Fall of 2011. We have almost completed the process of ensuring the ISLOs are (1) assessable, (2) using clearly defined terms, (3) meeting or exceeding national standards, (4) achievable by all students in all programs, and (5) aligned with the College's mission statement and values. We would like to share our findings and recommendations with the College community and obtain feedback from the campus at large once the review is completed. Please join us on March 23 in the Cafeteria at 2:00 p.m. for a brief presentation and discussion session about the College's ISLOs and our recommendations stemming from the review.
An informational email with more details will be sent out to everyone once the Assessment Committee has completed its review and recommendations are finalized.

Title: Cultural Barriers to Success for KCC students: Awareness, Empathy, Strategies
Date: March 16, 2012
Time: 2:00 – 3:30

Description:
Among the barriers that keep students from succeeding, many are universal and familiar: academic under-preparedness, financial difficulties, etc. However, there are also others that are specific to our student demographic here at KCC. This session will be looking at some of these "culture-based" barriers that our students face and how these barriers may be impacting student success and persistence at the college. Representatives of KCC's Makaloa group will be presenting information on the following topics with the goal of creating greater awareness of these barriers and, hopefully, greater empathy for our students:

- Personal/family issues unique to our local community (Isaiah Ka'auwai)
- Establishing meaningful connections to the curriculum (Jeff Mexia)
- Lack of Native Hawaiian instructional faculty (Kimo Perry)
- Issues of societal and institutional affiliation (Hawaiian Studies faculty)

College Conversation about Mathematics
Did you know that only 10% of students testing into MATH 22 will ever make it through college mathematics?
KCC Ohana, You are invited to a talk-story session with the Math Department and Jon Kalk. We will present data on how KCC math students do compared to national statistics. We will also offer some solutions to address this complicated math problem. In order to make a difference to those who tested into the lowest level of remedial/developmental math, we need to consider an alternative to how we do mathematics here at KCC.
Since math affects almost everyone here, as a prerequisite or program requirement, your valuable input will be much appreciated.

College Conversation Reminder
Reminding everyone that there will be a College Conversation at Fine Dining on Friday, December 3rd. Due to Helen's tight schedule on Friday, the Conversation will begin at 1:30 pm rather than at 1:00 pm as originally planned. The College Council meeting will follow at 3:00 pm at Fine Dining.
The topic of conversation will be: how we can better serve our Hawaiian students. Representatives from Makaloa will be attending. As many of the faculty members will be at J.N.'s campus visit, faculty are encouraged to voice their ideas and opinions on this topic by emailing me.
