On behalf of the Culinary Institute of the Pacific at Kaua‘i Community College, I would like to extend our deepest appreciation and mahalo to everyone who helped make this fundraising event a great success. With your help, the tickets sold out in a little over two weeks and in addition we were able to garner much needed sponsorships from our Kaua‘i businesses.

Volunteering for an event of this size and complexity says a lot about all those who helped. Many months of intricate planning and organizing is rewarded when the music starts, the doors open and the guests are able to enjoy the greatest and latest in culinary fashion matched with the most delicious wine pairings; together with a fantastic blind auction with prizes valued over $8,000! What a great gathering of happy faces and happy tummies!!

Thank you for making this event an opportunity for our culinary arts students to work alongside the biggest names in Island Chefs, Alan Wong and Vikram Garg, as well as Kaua‘i’s best chefs! Because of your warmth and hospitality, these great chefs are looking forward to participating in next year’s event.

We thank all the volunteers for making Kaua‘i’s signature event a great success and one of the best on Kaua‘i.

Mark Oyama, Spring Gourmet Gala Chair
Culinary Institute of the Pacific at Kaua‘i CC

He Kiko Maoli No. Over time, the topic of kākau uhi/kākau mōlī/uhi mōlī (popularly known by the inaccurate term ʻ tattooʻ ) has been recorded and written largely from a non-native perspective. Lufi will offer a glimpse into this sacred, traditional practice from a kanaka maoli perspective.

Lufi A. Luteru is kupaʻāina from the valley of Mākaha, Oʻahu. Her moʻokūʻauhau maoli stems from Kilauea, Kauaʻi, where her grandmother was born, 91 years ago. She earned her B.A. and M.A. in Hawaiian Studies from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She is currently a Lecturer at Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies and Windward Community College, where she teaches HWST 107, HWST 222 and HWST 322 (Mānoa), and is a published poet. She is a multi-media artisan, and her specialty is Hawaiian Fiber Arts and Jewelry design. One community service that she is dedicated to is providing monthly workshops to make hīnaʻi lauhala (lauhala baskets) for iwi kūpuna (kanaka maoli ancestral remains). She is currently working on three new HWST course proposals, 1) a comparative studies course in Fiber Arts of Moananuiākea, 2) a comparative studies course in Native poetry of Moananuiākea, and 3) a comparative studies course in Native film of Moananuiākea.
Documentation of Traditional Knowledge and Ways of Knowing and Doing.
HEi: Hawaiian String Figure Making. This workshop will discuss Hawaiian ways of knowing and doing using Hei as the medium of learning. Participants will also have hands-on experiences with Hawaiian Hei making.

Hei is the Hawaiian cultural equivalent of the childʻs game known as catʻs cradle. Often accompanied by mo`olelo (stories) and oli (chants), Hei presents a traditional method of performing and remembering long narratives. Hei are associated with various aspects of Hawaiian culture such as performance cartography, sharing of legends and depiction of everyday activities.

Much of the traditional knowledge of Hei has been lost, but practitioners like Kumu Kalani are making efforts to revive this cultural practice.
Ka'ie'ie: How Diving into Our Past Will Give Rise to Our Future. Hawaiian language and culture are as deep as the waters surrounding our islands. By understanding our history, whether through research or oral traditions, we empower ourselves with the knowledge our kūpuna gifted to us as part of the great legacy that is the Hawaiian Kingdom. For the Hawaiian Kingdom was more than just a government, it was a sovereign people, language, land, culture and life. Through this presentation of history and music, we will discuss the important historical relationship between O‘ahu and Kaua‘i, and more importantly discuss how these islands can work together to empower our collective future.
