Writers to Read Their Work at KCC Library

Kaua‘i Backstory and Kaua‘i CC are co-sponoring “Kaua‘i Backstory’s Reading Series,” to be held Mon, April 26, 2010, from 5:00 pm-6:45 pm, at the KCC Library. The event is free and the public is invited.

This year, Kaua‘i Backstory has invited Jill Marie Landis, Kristin Hannah and Stella Cameron to be keynote guests at the mid-year Reading Series. All three are multiple best-selling authors.

Kauai Backstory is an online literary venue for rigorous writing with a view about Kauai. They look for writing that builds understanding, not walls. They encourage writing (and imagery) that engenders respectful dialogue as a way to build community through conversation, the time-honored tradition of kama'ilio, talk story.

ptk event: Zero Waste--From Trash to Cash

Aloha kakou,

This coming Monday, April 26th, the Phi Theta Kappa honor society will host a forum titled "Zero Waste – From Trash to Cash," with a panel featuring JoAnn Yukimura, former mayor and council member; John Harder, former solid waste manager of Kauai and Maui Counties; and Pam Lightfoot-Burrell of Zero Waste Kaua'i.

Speakers will take you on a journey from the old mindset of "mining the earth, making stuff, using stuff, and throwing away stuff," a paradigm that is destroying the earth with ever increasing landfills and taxpayer costs, to a new world of "Zero Waste" where Reduce, ReUse and Recycle will contribute jobs and businesses to the new economy. Come hear the possibilities of a Zero Waste Kauai, a future that will be more sustainable, more beautiful, and more prosperous by how we manage our "stuff."

The forum will be held on Monday, April 26th, in the Library at Kaua'i Community College from noon to 1:15 pm. The public is welcome.

See you there. If you have any questions, please contact Alan Boyes, Anne McKenna, or Jeff Mexia. A promotional flyer is below. Me ke aloha... Alan, Anne, and Jeff
