2013 KCC Summer Art Exhibition (Jun 3-8)

Kaua`i Community College students from Painting, Drawing, Graphic Design, Photography, and Video Production classes held a soft opening of their exhibition of works at the Kukui Grove Shopping Center in Lihue, June 3rd. They invite the public to visit the exhibit.

Kaua`i CC Art student, Angel Camarillo gives a tour
of works on display at the 2013 kcc summer art show.
The show is being held June 3 - 8, 2013, in the Kaua`i Society of Artists Gallery at Kukui Grove Shopping Center. The public is also invited to the Artist Reception on Friday, June 7, at 6:00 pm.

“This is the first time holding an exhibition outside of the Kaua`i CC campus. Students are able to not only exhibit, but also sell their artwork. The goals of Kaua`i CC’s art programs are to give those students hoping to move to a four-year education a great start, or to give those who are looking to expand their skill set the skills they need,” explained Mathew Fulmer, Art instructor at Kaua`i CC.

Matthew Fulmer, Art Instructor at Kaua`i CC, prepares
for day two of the 2013 kcc summer art show.

The Kaua`i Society of Artists generously donated the gallery space and waived commission fees to support Kaua`i CC students’ endeavors. The exhibition exposes the College’s art programs to those who may not be aware of the diversity of courses available at KCC.

“This exhibition is a great opportunity for both the students and the Kaua`i community to view a wide range of finished works. The students have the opportunity to see their work on the walls of a gallery, or on a big screen, and feel the pride of accomplishment that goes with a public display. Holding the exhibition at Kukui Grove Shopping Center opens the display to the whole island, including visitors. In addition, the community gets a window into the creativity being nurtured at the College, witnessing the new, home grown talent that is blossoming there. It encourages potential Kaua`i CC students to develop a vision of what they could be learning at Kaua`i CC. Truly a WIN-WIN event for everyone,” commented Gary Ellwood, Digital Video lecturer.

Angel Camarillo, Kauai` CC Art student gives Garden
Island Newspaper photographer Dennis Fujimoto a
tour of the 2013 kcc summer art show.
Angel Camarillo, a Kaua`i CC student who is pursuing a degree in Graphic Design, has some of her works on display and is has volunteered to be one of the exhibit sitters. “I want to get a feel for what I want to make sure of what I will pursue in life," said Camarillo about the choice she made to study at Kaua`i CC. Studying at Kaua`i CC also works for her because she wants to “be closer to home and see my sister and brother grow up,” she said.

Meet Artist Kazu Kauinana at CLUB DAY (9/12/12)

Hi Everybody,

My name is Kazu Kauinana. I am an artist. I am also "Hapa", (Japanese/Hawaiian) and grew up in Kaimuki on Oahu, just outside of Waikiki.

My art career began when I was 7 years old and I received a 2nd grade scholarship to the Honolulu Academy of Arts. I went to Kamehameha Schools from kindergarten through 9th grade before running away from home to California to surf and shape surfboards at age15.

Reality struck, my surfboard career did not take off and I was not making enough money pulling weeds. So I ended up living with my hanai sister, her Chicano husband, my 3 year‐old nephew, and baby niece in San Diego for 1 year. I did surf a little, but mainly I did laundry, baby sat (a lot), cleaned the yard and went to the city public school, where the student body was 1/3 Haole, 1/3 Chicano and 1/3 Black. This part of my history was an important factor that steered me into a life long passion for art, cultures, travel and awareness.

I returned to Hawaii in 1991 from New York City where I had lived for 13 years. I had been gone for a total of 25 years.

The driving force for my art always starts with an interest in a subject. The range of subjects is endless. Once I have a subject, I gather information, and with that information develop a concept. The concept inspires me to create a tangible object (usually a sculpture or drawing for a sculpture) that communicates the idea to the viewer. I try to keep the intended "meaning" of the artwork somewhat open so that many can have their own interpretations or version of the piece.

Just as I have shared part of my life with you, I would like you to come by my tent on "Club Day" on Wed., Sept. 12 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Campus Center Courtyard, and tell me about yourselves. I'm interested in what you feel about your school and your community. I want to know your career aspirations and your dreams. Stop by the tent and talk story and tell me what idea you think I should make tangible so everyone can look at your idea contribution and you can say, "Hey, I helped that guy Kahzmo make the sculpture for our school".

Martin Luther King Day Mural Project and Open Mic

There will be a Mural Project and Open Mic titled "Peace, Love, and Understanding," that will take place next Tuesday, January 18, from 12pm-2pm outside of the library. The idea for this project is to bring us all together as a campus and create an event that celebrates a great leader. I hope to have student and faculty participation to do readings and help fill in the sidewalk mural in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s message. The Open Mic participation is a way for spoken word artists and performers to speak out and express themselves about world peace, overcoming differences, and comment on our shared humanity.

Please spread the word to your students, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

Acting Class Final Performance

The THEA 221 Acting class's final performance is on Wednesday, December 8, at 12:15pm in room 105 of OSC Phase II.

Come hear these talented students perform scenes from the plays of Neil Simon and others. As an added bonus attraction, several students from the MUS 121B Voice Class will also be performing as a taste of their own final performance the next day, Thursday December 9.

Come support these dedicated individuals and feel free to bring your lunch! I'll send out a reminder notice early next week. I'm including the program  below. Hope you can make it!

Welcome to the Gecko

Kaua`i CC is the recipient of a ""gecko" sculpture created by artist Patrice Federspiel and donated by Kapiolani Women's Center in Honolulu.

In 2004, Ms. Federspiel had the honor of being one of 50 artists chosen to participate in Honolulu's "Geckos in Paradise" sculpture competition and exhibit. Patrice's gecko sold for $10,000 in the charity bidding to raise money for breast cancer research.

Come by the Chancellor's Office, where it temporarily sits, and see the colorful, whimsical sculpture.
