Art, Music, Dance, Free Food, and Drama this week!

Today, December 10th, will be the kickoff of our end-of-semester Art and Music Expo in the One Stop Center. Festivities will begin at 12 noon with an hour-long concert by the Vocal Ensemble, a performance by KCC's Hula Club, Na Liko Aloha O Ka Hui Hula, and a reception catered by Mark's Place. A selection of choral music as well as solos by seven of the students will be featured. And students from the various art classes will be on hand to talk about their works which will be on display beginning Tuesday and continuing through the week.

Then on Wednesday at 1:30 pm will be a performance of scenes from plays by the THEA 221 Beginning Acting students in the Daniel K. Inouye Technology Center Multi-Purpose Room (amphitheater-like classroom). Five 12-minute scenes will be performed by students in costume using basic props. Please come and support their efforts! Kaua`i Community College Honors and Thanks Donors of Over 100 Scholarships

Kaua`i CC and UH Foundation co-hosted a reception on November 26th, to honor and thank donors of the College's over 100 scholarship funds. Faculty, staff, and students were present to personally thank our generous and thoughtful donors. Special thanks were also conveyed to Kamehameha Schools and Hawai`i Community Foundation.

The evening began with a Pule by Isaiah Ka`auwai, counselor. Pualii Rossi Fukino, Hawaiian Studies faculty member, served as emcee. Culinary Arts Program students in the Introduction to Short Order and Intermediate Cooking courses, led by Chef instructors Martina Hilldorfer and Steven Nakata provided gourmet "high tea" refreshments. Nicole Morris, Music student, performed a heart rendering version of "Lemonade," by music artist Jeremy Passion.

    

Jana Digby Rothenberg-Blay, Lisa Rapozo, and Jonathon Tanagalin represent students in thanking donors.

Jana Digby Rothenberg-Blay, recent graduate in Liberal Arts, established a scholarship for the College in the name of her parents, Joy and Art Digby. Jana gifted the College with her mother’s teacher’s pension to fund the scholarship.

Students representing all student scholarship recipients, Lisa Rapozo, Wai`ale`ale Project and Jonathon Tangalin conveyed thanks to donors. Rapozo will receive her degree this December and transfer to UH-Hilo to major in Psychology. Tangalin is currently a Liberal Arts student. Rothenberg-Blay continues to help preserve the natural environment via videos she produces.

The Chancellor’s Office, Student Services, and Academic Support teamed up to coordinate the reception.

To all friends and donors, the students, faculty, and staff of Kaua`i Community College thank you for promoting student success and positively changing the lives of many.

Sea Grant College is an interdisciplinary unit at UH Manoa dedicated to achieving resilient coastal communities characterized by vibrant economies, social and cultural sustainability and environmental soundness. They are a partner in the Center for Island Climate Adaptation and Policy. Google it if you want to know more!

Because of its interdisciplinary nature, students interested in business/economics, environmental and cultural preservation, ocean studies, island studies, engineering and urban planning, and other fields will find this presentation interesting.

Come hear about this fascinating part of UH Manoa from Sea Grant's leaders and faculty and find out how you can be involved!

Workshop: UH Common Scholarship Application (12/04)

Representatives from the UH System Financial Aid Office are coming to KCC to conduct a workshop on the 2014-15 UH Common Scholarship Application, which becomes available on December 1, 2013

At this workshop, you will receive hands-on assistance with completing this online scholarship application, which may qualify you to be considered for over 50 different scholarships! That's nearly $100,000 in scholarship money just for Kauai CC students!!

KCC Students Model Leadership in Building a Sustainable Living Garden Island Community

Since announcing, in 2008, sustainable living as a major focus of teaching, learning and service to the Garden Island community, Kaua`i CC has developed courses where students have the opportunity to learn new skills that will help them to secure green professions. Under the guidance of the College`s Ho`ouluwehi: The Sustainable Living Institute of Kaua`i, like-minded faculty have joined forces to build awareness and engage students as leading contributors of a green Kaua`i.

KCC students in the College’s sustainable living affordable house construction classes, being taught by instructor Duke Lange, apply their skills toward completing an affordable housing prototype for Kaua`i. A 40-foot high-top shipping container is being repurposed to become a green, affordable living home. Completion of the project is scheduled to take place Fall 2014.

Facilities Engineering courses, being taught by instructor James Trujillo, have been an integral part of increasing recycling initiatives.  The best place to begin is at the KCC home, where students recently installed recycling bins around campus for paper, plastic and glass.  Already, awareness has grown and the reduction of KCC’s carbon footprint at has become a shared way of life.
