Kaua'i Community College 2014 Commencement

Commencement Speaker: OLENA HEU, Wake Up 2day Anchor / KHON2 Reporter

Olena Heu has been working as a reporter/anchor at KHON2 News (FOX) since 2007. She started at a general assignment reporter, then Wake Up 2day morning co-anchor since 2009. In addition to the responsibilities of anchoring the morning show, Olena is also the sole administrator for the Wake Up 2day social media accounts and assists with booking/scheduling interview segments. She has won several awards for her feature and spot news reporting.

A graduate of Hawai'i Pacific University, Olena holds a Master’s degree in Communication along with a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication. A proud magna cum laude graduate of Kapaa High School, Olena was raised on the island of Kaua'i by a single parent mother. She first got a taste of the news business as an intern for KHNL News 8. After college she was hired to work at KHON2 and also keeps busy as an active volunteer and devoted fundraiser for Special Olympics Hawai'i, Life Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu and Ronald McDonald House.


Student Speakers:

Lisa Rapozo earned her Associates in Liberal Arts from Kaua'i Community College in December of 2013. She is now pursuing her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Hawaii Hilo. Lisa was a member of the very first Wai'ale'ale Project cohort, and continues to serve as a peer mentor and through outreach activities. She is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa. She is the wife Daniel, and mother of Kaimi and Kainoa.

 Shyla Ayau is a student with the University of Hawai'i West Oahu's distance education program. She is graduating this semester with a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration and certificate in Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management. Shyla is originally from Hilo, Hawai'i and moved to Kaua'i in 2012 to raise her family. Shyla has worked in county government for ten years and is currently employed at the Kaua'i Fire Department as an Administrative Assistant. Through life's many challenges, Shyla has persevered to see her educational goals come to fruition and will be continuing her academic journey towards obtaining a Human Resources Management Master's degree at University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, Shidler Business College.

Rehearsal
Dress rehearsal begins promptly at 4:00 p.m. at the Vidinha Stadium
Do not be late!
Entering, standing, sitting, and exiting procedures will be rehearsed.
Light refreshments will be provided.

Dress
You must be dressed in your cap and gown when you arrive at dress rehearsal. Caps should be worn at all times except during the playing of the national anthem and Hawai'i Pono'i, when men should remove their caps. Your tassel should be worn on the right side.

There is no place to store personal belongings. Handbags cannot be carried. Leis are not presented or worn until after the ceremony.

The graduation cap and gown is available for purchase at the College Bookstore. Price for the cap/gown/tassel is $38.75 (price is subject to change without prior notice). The gown is "one size fits all" based on your height and sold on a first come first serve basis. It is not necessary to place an order. If you feel that you need an "oversize" gown, please call 245-8273 for visit the bookstore to try one on. If it is necessary, the bookstore will bring one in for you. Graduation attire for men is a shirt with collar, long black pants and black or dark-colored shoes. Attire for women is a dress (must be shorter that gown) or long black pants, and black or dark-colored shoes.

Name Card
Pick up your name card when you report for rehearsal (do not alter). You will be handing your card to the announcer on stage before you walk across the stage.

After the ceremony 
Meet your family and friends by the appropriate signs. Confetti and streamers are prohibited.

Guests 
The gate opens at 5:30 p.m.

Diplomas
Because semester records will not be processed by commencement day, the conferring of degrees at the ceremony is provisional, pending verification that degree requirements have been met.
