KCC Earthday 2012 Events

"Mobilizing Kaua`i and the Earth"
Come join us as we celebrate EarthDay all week long with movies, discussions, and a gathering of community on campus to share ideas, passions, and solutions for a sustainable and prosperous future for Kaua'i.

Our first EarthDay event on Monday April 16 at 6 p.m. will be a screening of the film, Establishing A Food Forest, in Room 114 of the Electronics Technology Building.
The 80-minute documentary details the work of Geoff Lawton, a permaculturist from Australia, who sets out to create abundance and restore vitality to the land and those who steward it. Jill Richardson and Paul Massey from Regenerations Botanical Garden in partnership with KCC's Ho'ouluwehi program will be on hand to provide insight and inspiration on how you can help create an abundance of food resources through similar permaculture design principles and activities on Kaua'i.
On Tuesday April 17 at noon, our second EarthDay event will be a panel discussion on Capitalism, Entrepreneurship and the Green Movement: The Greening of Capitalism. This one hour panel discussion will take place upstairs in the Student Lounge and will be moderated by the Hawaii Small Business Development Center's John Latkiewicz.

On Wednesday April 18 (also at noon in the Student Lounge) our next EarthDay event, in partnership with ZeroWasteKauai, will feature the film Tapped-The Movie, a 90 minute documentary examining the role of the bottled water industry and its effects on our health, climate change, pollution, and our reliance on oil. On Thursday April 19 from 12 noon to 6 p.m., KCC will be occupied by Kaua`i's sustainability movement as we celebrate EarthDay and look towards sustainable solutions for Kaua'i. In addition to all the tents, performers, food and information that will gather around the Performing Art Center, two local school based programs will present their vision for Kaua'i.
808 FUSE  (Fun Using Sustainable Energy) from Kapaa High School will present their vision of a model youth activity center. 808 FUSE  is a virtual enterprise developed by students of KHS teacher Christine Farina. The concept of the company revolves around the idea of promoting fun, food, and products that are eco-friendly and will help reduce its carbon footprint.
Kilauea residents Felicia Cowden and her son Ian from Akamai Learning, a home school program will share from their recently published book, Life is the School, Love is the Lesson. The presentation of Akamai Learning and 808FUSE will be held in Room 114 of the Electronics Technology Building and begin after 4 p.m. to conclude by 6 p.m.
Zero Waste Kauai happily helped event goers learn about how they can make a difference everyday.

Our final EarthDay event will take place on Friday April 20 at 6 p.m. with a showing of the film, Vanishing of the Bees (http://www.vanishingbees.com/trailer/ ) in Room 114 of the Electronic Technology Building. In partnership with the Kauai Beekeepers Association and the KCC Apiary Program, this event will conclude with a discussion on how you can help create a bee friendly Garden Island.
