Students! We hope this activity-filled International Awareness Month spurs your interest in exploring routes beyond what you may have imagined before. We're kicking off with an Opening Event and live music at 10 am to 1 pm on Monday, February 3, outside the LRC.

Information Session: UH-Manoa Master of Social Work (10/23)

Inaugural FAFSA Feed Day (2/06)

The KCC Financial Aid Office has received a GEAR UP grant to fund a new outreach activity for the campus. We will be holding a FAFSA Feed Day on February 6, 2013 from 11:30-1:30 in the OCET Computer Lab, Room 104A. The goal for this event is to increase financial aid application awareness and the number of students who apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the priority deadline of April 1, 2013. Current/potential students and community members are welcome to attend.

The main reasons for applying by the priority deadline are:

• Many need-based grants are awarded on a first come, first serve basis. Students who apply by April 1, receive priority consideration for these funds. 
• Applying early and submitted all financial aid documents ensures that a student's fall 2013 schedule will not be purged for non-payment by the tuition payment deadline.
• Many outside scholarship applications require FAFSA results to be reported and have early spring deadlines. 

Students can stop by OCET Room 104A on February 6th and receive assistance with completing their FAFSA. They also can grab a slice of pizza for getting "their slice of the (financial aid) pie!"

UH Manoa faculty John Cusick, Philip Moravcik, and David Penn will introduce educational programs, research projects, and service activities that are conducted through the Environmental Center / Water Resources Research Center, and ask that we attend to together explore how to strengthen and sustain the bonds between Kauai CC and Manoa campuses programs. (A bit of interesting history: Chancellor Cox's father started the Hawaii Environmental Center.)

Representatives to Talk About International Opportunities

Two representatives from the University of Hawaii Community Colleges, International Education office will be on campus this Thursday, February 2, 2012, to provide more information about international study opportunities for UHCC students. They are already scheduled to visit various classes on campus, but will also provide two open sessions in the LRC Lobby, 11:30am - 12:30pm, and 2:15pm - 3:00pm. For some of these, the UHCC office would like to send one student per campus if possible. Please let your students know about these great opportunities to broaden their education and international understanding. Applications are currently open. Students In Service Orientation

WHAT IS IT? Currently, there are 90 positions available in Hawai`i for college students and veterans from all disciplines who like to learn by serving in volunteer positions. If you are already working on your practicum, internships, Service learning projects, or just want to serve your country as an AmeriCorps member addressing local community issues, learning valuable civic and workforce skills, and aspiring to a lifetime of civic engagement, this is the program for you.

WHY: This is a great way to earn $1100-$2700.00 in an educational grant.

WHEN: Thursday November 17th or Friday December 2nd at 3 pm

WHERE: One Stop Center Room 105 Kaua`i Community College

DON'T HAVE TIME TO VOLUNTEER? Many students don't realize that they are already serving more volunteer hours than they realize working at school, with a key project, a church charity or a non-profit interest. A percentage of personal development training, conferences and classtime counts towards your community service hours. Let us help you to determine if this will fit your already busy schedule. Over 140 students in Hawaii have already started their service this year and choose to pay for their educational costs by this method.

Meet UHCC's International Education Specialists

On Thursday, February 10th, UHCC International Education Specialists, Debbie Nakagawa and Karen Hayashida, will be on campus to brief any interested faculty and students on current travel abroad scholarships exclusively targeting community college students. They will meet with the Ethnobotany Class from 9:25 and 10:40, followed by meetings with counseling and financial aid personnel.

The specialists will be available for short 5 minute classroom presentations and presentations to academic advisors, student groups, and individual students.

From 11:00 am to 1:00 pm the representatives will be available to meet individually with any interested parties in the cafeteria.

Receiving a Tax Refund?

Consider marking box 24c on your Hawaii State Tax return to help prevent domestic violence and child abuse.

As you complete your HI State Tax Return and IF you are scheduled to receive a refund, please consider (X) Box 24c to prevent domestic violence and child abuse. Through legislative action a Trust Fund was set up to provide financial support for preventing domestic violence and child abuse and neglect programs.

Your contribution, no matter how small, makes a big difference in the lives of others in our community. What is $1.00 if it will save another family from the physical and emotional trauma caused by violence? Copies of the 24c Brochure were placed in the mailroom, pick one up and check out the State's' stats. Also, please help yourself to an Emergency Kauai CC card.
