Filipino Heritage Month Activities

The Pamantasan Club is celebrating Filipino Heritage Month! Join us in our activities this week. Each presentation will be followed by a tasting of a variety of Filipino desserts in the foyer of the LRC at 1pm. Art, Music, Dance, Free Food, and Drama this week!

Today, December 10th, will be the kickoff of our end-of-semester Art and Music Expo in the One Stop Center. Festivities will begin at 12 noon with an hour-long concert by the Vocal Ensemble, a performance by KCC's Hula Club, Na Liko Aloha O Ka Hui Hula, and a reception catered by Mark's Place. A selection of choral music as well as solos by seven of the students will be featured. And students from the various art classes will be on hand to talk about their works which will be on display beginning Tuesday and continuing through the week.

Then on Wednesday at 1:30 pm will be a performance of scenes from plays by the THEA 221 Beginning Acting students in the Daniel K. Inouye Technology Center Multi-Purpose Room (amphitheater-like classroom). Five 12-minute scenes will be performed by students in costume using basic props. Please come and support their efforts! 2013 Food Drive Prize - "Reserved" Parking Stall by OSC

Congratulations to the Career Club who won the "Reserved" parking stall by the One Stop Center for the month of November 2103. They were the winners of the Spring 2013 Hawaii Food Bank drive, bringing in 70 lbs of food. Overall, the campus donated 324 lbs of food and $70.00 to the Hawaii Food Bank in April 2013.

Parking in the "Reserved" stall during November is now for the Career Club only and a KCC issued permit is required. The sign for that stall reads "Reserved by Parking Permit Only". Security will be checking cars that are parked in this stall and if the authorized parking permit is not DISPLAYED on the dashboard then your car may be towed.

KCC Students Attend Pamantasan Conference

Students from Kauai Community College's Pamantasan Club attended the annual Pamantasan Conference at the University of Hawaii-Hilo Campus on April 12th, 2013. The theme this year was "Back to the Farm! Our roots in sustainable practice." 

Students attended various workshops on the impacts of climate change and invasive species, food relationships, shifting to a sustainability consciousness, vermicomposting, permaculture/edible landscaping, and more.

During lunch, students were treated to a "Glimpse into Filipino Culture through Fashion." The trip to the Big Island was a first for the majority of the club's members so after the conference, the students went on a tour of the island that included a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a night in Kailua-Kona, and many stops along the way.

Club Math fundraiser booth! This Saturday (12/15)

You may have heard about the upcoming Kauai Grown & Kauai Made Holiday Market and Craft Fair here at the college on the front lawn this Saturday, 12/15.

I'm proud to say that our very own Club Math is going to have a fundraiser booth at the fair! Last year's booth was very successful, raising nearly $300 for the club. This year, we'll once again have coffee roasted by Gigi's farm (iced or hot). We'll also be selling braided bracelets, handmade by our club members who took time out of their studies to learn how to make them. Here's a sample of just a few of the actual bracelets we'll be selling:

Last Call ~ Filipino Fiesta

The Pamantasan (higher education) Club is having a fiesta this week Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, from 6:00 p.m.
to 9:00 p.m. at KCC's Cafeteria to raise funds to attend a UH Systemwide Conference in April 2013 at UH Hilo. Dinner & Show tickets are $30.00 and if you're interested in supporting the club, please contact me before Wednesday, Oct. 17, 12:00 noon.

The club will also be participating in "Adopt a School Day," a Hawaii Jaycees Statewide Program, to provide service to the college. The club will be assisting the Na Kama Pono Pre-School with reorganizing their storage cabinets on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, 8:30-11:30 a.m.

KCC Student ID Bus Pass Pilot Program Extended

Aloha Students!

Kauai Community College signed an agreement with the County of Kauai to extend the FREE KCC Student ID Bus Pass Pilot Program through the end of the Spring 2012 semester. This means students with their current student identification cards will be able to continue to ride the bus for FREE. The Kauai County Council last week voted in favor of allowing the Mayor to continue this important program after a large outpour of student support for the program.

This pilot will continue to promote sustainability, reduce parking lot overflow, and give students an easy way to save money. In the coming months ASUH-KCC Student Government will be looking for student input on how to best extend this program beyond the pilot phase.

Student Newspaper Seeks Applicants

KCC Board of Publications Formed
Seeking Student Editor and Reporters Now

Kaua'i Community College has formed a Board of Publications (BOP) that will oversee all student publications on campus. "This is an exciting time for our campus," said Ian Ross, BOP Chair. "We must fill key positions as soon as possible, including the student editor, to begin both an online and printed publication of our revitalized campus newspaper, Ka Leo 'o KCC, this semester." All students at KCC are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be registered, full- or part-time KCC students. Positions include: editor, reporter, assistant advertising manager, and photojournalist. Job descriptions will be sent to all interested applicants upon receipt of their letter of interest. Send resume or letter of interest to kccbop@hawaii.edu before midnight, February 25. Screening will begin Wednesday, February 29, at 12:00 noon in Room 207 of the One Stop Center.

There are five voting members of the KCC BOP, which will screen the applicants and select the voluntary positions. BOP officers are all students and include: Ian Ross, Chair; Taylor Stanton, Vice Chair; and Crystal Cruz, Secretary/Treasurer. Two directors, Carol Bain and Richard Randolph, complete the newly formed board. The charter and bylaws were finalized by the founding board and subsequently approved on January 10, by Chancellor Helen Cox and her designee, Vice Chancellor James Dire.

This board will provide administrative oversight to all KCC student publications. The first hard-copy printing deadline will be set once a printing company is contracted by the recently formed KCC Board of Publications.

Kaua'i Community College is offering two writing intensive courses this semester, News Writing and a Newspaper Lab, taught by Carol Bain. One goal is to support a regularly published campus newspaper and the students who take these courses will be asked to contribute news stories for publication. Any student at the college who may wish to contribute writing for publication, including news, feature stores, poetry and short essays, may be considered.

Adopt-A-School Day

The Hawaii Jaycees sponsors an annual event called "Adopt-A-School" Day. It is an opportunity for individuals or groups to provide volunteer assistance to schools in their communities. KCC's Pamantasan Club has been given the "go" by College Council to adopt our school for the day!

This Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011 from 8:30-10:30 ish club members will be cleaning up the area around the One Stop Center Bldg. and if you want to "Be the change you want to see in the world." Ghandi, you are welcome to join us. Our plan is to spend the morning cleaning then head down to Kalapaki Beach for some fun in the sun. Please contact me if you are planning to join us.

Film Club screening: A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

Come one, come all! Thursday evening, October 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Tech 114 Multi-Purpose room, the KCC Film Club will be screening Stanley Kubrick's 1971 classic "A Clockwork Orange." Tell your students!
A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 film adaptation of Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel of the same name. It was written, directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick. It features disturbing, violent images, facilitating its social commentary on psychiatry, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian, future Britain.
Alex (Malcolm McDowell), the main character, is a charismatic, psychopathic delinquent whose interests include classical music (especially Beethoven), rape, and so-called 'ultra-violence'. He leads a small gang of thugs (Pete, Georgie, and Dim), whom he calls his droogs (from the Russian друг, "friend", "buddy"). The film chronicles the horrific crime spree of his gang, his capture, and attempted rehabilitation via controversial psychological conditioning. Alex narrates most of the film in Nadsat, a fractured adolescent slang comprising Slavic (especially Russian), English, and Cockney rhyming slang.
A Clockwork Orange features a soundtrack comprising mostly classical music selections and Moog synthesizer compositions by Walter Carlos. The now-iconic poster of A Clockwork Orange was created by designer Bill Gold. The film holds the Guinness World Record for being the first in media history to use the Dolby sound system.

Club Math Welcome Back Social and Update!

Club Math would like to invite you to our first meeting on Monday 8/30 @ noon in the OSC lobby. Bring your own lunch or join us for pizza.

This is a very exciting semester for Club Math and the Math Department in general. We have two new math faculty members. We are running the whole entire series of math courses with multiple sections and most are full. We even have 25 students in Calculus! We have a few very motivated students running the club. Hawaiian Studies May Day Performance

On Saturday, May 1, our Hawaiian Studies students and members of Kū Pono I Hoʻokahi Hawaiʻi (KCC's Hawaiian Club) are celebrating May Day with a night of Hawaiian and Tāhitian music and dance. Students from the HAW 102 day course will be dancing hula and performing chants that they've learned this semester, and other Hawaiian Studies students will be bringing their talents as well.

Also performing with us will be students from Kawaikini NCPCS, and Nic Kāneakua's Ori Uvira with Tāhitian dance. Doors open at 5:30pm at the Performing Arts Center, and the show starts at 6:00.

This coming Monday, April 26th, the Phi Theta Kappa honor society will host a forum titled "Zero Waste – From Trash to Cash," with a panel featuring JoAnn Yukimura, former mayor and council member; John Harder, former solid waste manager of Kauai and Maui Counties; and Pam Lightfoot-Burrell of Zero Waste Kaua'i.

Speakers will take you on a journey from the old mindset of "mining the earth, making stuff, using stuff, and throwing away stuff," a paradigm that is destroying the earth with ever increasing landfills and taxpayer costs, to a new world of "Zero Waste" where Reduce, Re­Use and Recycle will contribute jobs and businesses to the new economy. Come hear the possibilities of a Zero Waste Kauai, a future that will be more sustainable, more beautiful, and more prosperous by how we manage our "stuff."

The forum will be held on Monday, April 26th, in the Library at Kaua'i Community College from noon to 1:15 pm. The public is welcome.
