Business Education Department Creates Sustainable "Library"

We have kept busy cleaning and purging in our Business Education Division building this summer, and we decided to re-use this old bookshelf and turn it into a sustainable reading area.

Everyone is welcome to take a book to read, leave a book to share, and help to recycle knowledge. Our sign says it all. 

The bookshelf is located in the entrance hallway of our building. Thanks go out to Becky, Tim, and Suesue for their contributions.

Mahalo and Congratulations

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Mahalo for a very productive year. I know this was a difficult one--with pay cuts, budget cuts, fewer staff to cover the same work, high enrollment and a host of other stresses and strains. I want to thank you for making it a truly wonderful year, despite all these things. From the care taken of our physical campus to the financial stewardship activities, to the care and teaching of our students, all of you pulled together to make improve the lives of our students. In our small community each one of you makes a difference, and I appreciate each and every one of you--those who stay late to make sure things are done, those who come up with new, great ideas, those of you who put one step in front of the other to do good solid work, those of you who question what we are doing---all of you are valuable assets to our grand endeavor. For those of you who are leaving for the summer, please go safely and have a fulfilling summer whether that relaxing on a beach, climbing a mountain or playing with kids. For those of you who will still be here all summer, take a deep breath before jumping into summer tasks. For all of you, MAHALO!!

I will be on the mainland until the 25th seeing my son graduate with his Masters Degree from Arizona State and then hanging out with family for a few days. Before returning, John and I will go backpacking in the Utah desert to give our spirits and bodies new energy. I wish you all similar opportunities to enjoy family and recharge your batteries.

CCLC Congratulations

Congratulations to Maureen Tabura, who has been selected as the 2011-12 Community College Leadership Champion representative for Kaua'i Community College. CCLC was established in 2004 through the vision and sponsorship of Joyce Tsunoda and the many UHCC and community contributors to the Joyce S. Tsunoda Community College Leadership Development Fund. The Leadership Champions is comprised of representatives from the seven community colleges and the UHCC System Office, who share an interest in learning to be better leaders.

The mission of the University of Hawai'i Community Colleges Leadership Champions (CCLC) is to identify, encourage, develop, and support the next generation of community college leadership.
The Goals of CCLC are to:

• Identify and encourage individuals to welcome roles of leadership
• Develop creative dynamic leadership committed to the core values of the UHCCs
• Support an atmosphere of leadership among faculty, staff, and administration

BENEFITS INCLUDE OPPORTUNITIES TO:

• Network with other professionals from our sister campuses 
• Meet and learn from the various leaders within our UH System 
• Develop leadership, organizational, communication, and team building skills 
• Attend a higher education conference on the mainland (final conference to be determined, but perhaps League for Innovation) 

ELIGIBILITY:
Any staff member who is permanent full-time, who has demonstrated leadership potential, who is committed to diversity, public stewardship, working for the greater good, and who desires to pursue personal and professional development in community college leadership.

Maureen will be a wonderful addition to the leadership group, and I congratulate her on her selection.

Interested in Beekeeping?

The Kaua'i Beekeepers Association (KBee), will be hosting a public meeting on Friday April 15 at KCC in the Electronic and Technology Building's Multi- Purpose Rm114. The featured speaker will be Danielle Downey, the state's newly hired apiary specialist. The meeting will start at 6 pm with Danielle's presentation, and with a question and answer discussion to wrap up the evening's event.

Ms. Downey will be focusing her discussion on common honeybee diseases and how to identify, treat and prevent them from becoming problematic for beekeepers. A brief update on the state's plan for assisting local beekeepers and helping Kaua'i keep the small hive beetle and varroa mite off the Garden Island will be included in the discussion.

Danielle will also be making a presentation along with Jimmy Trujillo from the Kauai Beekeepers Association at the Kauai County Farm Bureau's Garden Fair on the following day April 16. Their mid-day presentation, titled "The Buzz about Beekeeping: Beekeeping Basics and How to Get Started" will be a lecture and demonstration on the methods, techniques and equipment necessary to start keeping bees for honey production or increased pollination for your farm or garden. KBee will also have a booth at the Garden Fair to share additional information on how to get involved and learn more about beekeeping on Kauai.

KCC EarthDay 2011

Aloha kakou,

This year's Earth Day celebration will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Starting at 11 am and running throughout the day and into the evening, KCC will be hosting community groups and local vendors to create space on campus for the exchange of ideas, products and services related to environmental awareness, natural resource conservation, green economic development, alternative energy use, community and school gardens, and local produce and crafts. There will be music, food, an open mic, mini eco fashion show, and to finish the evening off, movies beneath the stars. It promises to be a full day of entertainment, information, and an excellent opportunity to learn, share, and participate in KCC's green evolution.

If you have a class, program, or service related to the environment or sustainability that you would like to promote we encourage you to contact us and we can reserve a table for you. Our 20 tables are filling up fast and we want to ensure that KCC's programs promote their upcoming classes and programs. Feel free to email either ASUH-KCC Vice President Taylor Stanton or me at if you have any questions or would like to reserve a table under the big tent. We will be sending out another reminder next week with more details of the events planned and the program schedule.
