Food Drive Update
Aloha,
Here's an update on our campaign to feed the hungry on Kaua'i, during the ongoing State Employees' Food Drive at the campus of Kaua'i Community College.
We have collected 34 pounds of food so far. Thank you to everyone that generously donated!
While most of us will be off next week for Spring Break, please consider purchasing a few extra non-perishable items while shopping and bringing them with you when the campus reopens on March 29th.
Remember, in addition to non-perishables, any and all monetary donations will be greatly appreciated by The Kaua'i Food Bank.

Third Annual Hakuoh University International Study Tour - Summer 2010
Open to outstanding students from any University of Hawai‘i Community College campus
Hakuoh University in Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture, 50 miles north of Tokyo, offers a ten-day summer homestay program to seven UHCC students (one per campus if possible) who have demonstrated leadership in their community and/or school and want to learn first-hand about Japan and Japanese culture. Students selected for the program will engage in intercultural activities with Hakuoh students, study Japanese culture, visit historical sites, and present a capstone project that reflects the participant’s experience in serving his/her community and/or school. Participants are required to do daily oral and written guided reflections and submit a culminating paper one week upon return from Japan. Also, participants are expected to serve as a campus host and participate in activities with Hakuoh University students when they come to Hawai‘i for their study tours.
Dates: June 17 – June 28, 2010 (tentative dates)

- In accordance with the collective bargaining settlement and to recover energy savings to meet the budget shortfall, Kaua‘i Community College, as well as the rest of the University of Hawai‘i System, will be closed to the public during its Spring Break: March 22-25.
- The Health & Wellness Center will be open Monday, March 22 and Wednesday, March 24 from noon – 4:00 pm, for Family Planning appointments only.
- The Performing Arts Center will be open for previously contracted events.
- For classes with the Office of Continuing Education and Training (OCET), please consult the Continuing Education link on the KCC webpage for a full description of classes, or call 245-8318.
- The Hawai‘i Small Business Development Center Network will be open from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Please call 241-3148 for information or an appointment.
- “The UH system has selected dates for closure that are non-instructional,” said Dr. Helen Cox, Chancellor of the College. In addition, we are making sure that time-sensitive, critical services will continue. The faculty, staff, and administration at Kaua‘i Community College have a clear focus on serving our students and members of the Kaua‘i community. Our vigilance will continue as we do our part in addressing budget challenges and personnel contracts.”

This track leads you through the steps required to add problem-based learning to your classroom. You will prepare a course that uses tasks from our online library ( http://elc.fhda.edu/faculty/scenarios.html) or create your own PBL tasks, find industry volunteers to visit your classroom, practice facilitating student groups, and design feedback and assessment items for different levels of student work.

Summary:
The aim of this presentation is to share some of the successful strategies used in delivering a Worldwide Online Conference.Dr. Kimura coordinates the TCC Online Conference, a worldwide online conference for 700-900 professors, librarians, information technology support specialists, administrators and student services personnel. This conference, conducted annually entirely online, highlights issues, challenges, directions and the use of the Internet in online learning, as well as in "hybrid" face-to-face classes (http://tcc.kcc.hawaii.edu).

This Friday 3/12 from 1:00 to 2:30 in Fine Dining we have a workshop entitled "Motivation in the Classroom and on the Job."
About the workshop:
All students have had hundreds of teachers in their lifetimes. A very few
of these teachers they remember as being exceptionally good. What are the
qualities that combine to create an excellent, memorable teacher? Why do
some teachers inspire students to work three times harder than they
normally would, while others inspire students to skip class? Why do
students learn more from some teachers than others? Perhaps these
teachers better know how to motivate their students. Join Jerry Cerny,
HonCC Faculty Development Coordinator, for an interactive and informative
workshop on 'Motivation in the Classroom and on the Job.'
