TENNIS COURT CLOSURE - The tennis courts will be closed from Monday, May 21st for 5 weeks for resurfacing. Please call 245-8333 if there are any questions. (Posted by C.Shirai)

PARKING LOT CLOSURE (Slurry Seal) -- The parking lots will be slurry sealed and closed from public use on the following dates:

• Parking lot fronting the Performing Arts Center (PAC) on Tues, May 15 to Thurs, May 17.
• Parking lot fronting the OSC will be closed Fri, May 18, until Mon, May 21.

The lot fronting the Technology Building will be opened on Friday, May 18. Please call Maintenance at 245-8364 if there are any questions. (Posted by C.Shirai)


ELECTRICAL OUTAGES -- In order to facilitate ongoing energy management system efforts, electricity in the following building will be shutdown for approximately 30 to 45 minutes as noted below. During these periods, wireless network access in these areas will be affected. In order to protect our equipment and to accommodate the Monday morning shutdowns, all network devices will be shutdown beginning from 10 p.m., Sunday, May 20. It is anticipated that servers and associated network devices will be operational prior to 8am on Monday, May 21. During each shutdown, at least one KCC personnel will be on-site with the contractor and will verify electrical feeder circuit operation and network functions of the affected buildings.

• Thur, 5/17, 5 a.m. - Campus Center, Culinary, Welding, Carpentry, Electronics, Elections
                    6 a.m. - Autobody, Automotive, Fine Arts, Social Science, Hawaiian Studies 
• Fri, 5/18, 5 p.m. - OCET, Bookstore 

• Mon, 5/21, 5 a.m. - OSC
                    6 a.m. - Natural Science, Business Ed, Nursing, Nursing Portables, Nursing Annex
                    8 a.m. - Theater 
• Tue, 5/22, 5 a.m. - LRC, Faculty 1 & 2, Wellness Center
  Note: LRC shutdown may affect our front end router and network switches. We are not certain if our efforts to place additional backup power will be sufficient for the outage duration. Full network service prior to 7 a.m. is anticipated.   (Posted by P.Watase)

STRIPPING & WAXING Schedule - The Operations and Maintenance staff will be stripping and waxing this summer. The following areas will be closed while they are stripped and waxed:

• May 29 - June 1: Faculty 1 offices, hallways, and restrooms 
• June 4 - 8: Faculty 2 offices and hallways
• June 12 - 15: Hawaiian Studies classroom, Welding & Technology restrooms
• June 18 - 22: Social Science, room 104 and restrooms
• June 25 - 29: Automotive, rooms 101 A/B, Daryl's office, and restrooms
• July 2 - 6: One Stop Center restrooms (1st and 2nd floors)
• July 9 - 13: Cafeteria classrooms and restrooms, Campus Center restrooms
• July 16 - 20: OCET classrooms, hallways, and restrooms
• July 23 - 27: FARM classrooms, offices, and restrooms
• July 24 - 27: Maintenance restrooms
• July 30 - Aug 3: Business, rooms 111, 112 and restrooms
• July 31 - Aug 3: LRC & Media restrooms
• August 7 - 13: PAC restrooms

Commencement Speakers

Key Note Speaker, Mason Chock

Mason Chock is a respected leader in our community and is the President of Kupu a’e, a personal development as well as counseling and leadership advancement program in Kaua’i. Additionally, Mr. Chock is the President of Kaua’i Team Challenge, Inc., an outdoor experiential education program specializing in outdoor, adventure-based therapy, team building and enhancing self-awareness. Prior to starting Kupu a’e, Mr. Chock was the Executive Director of Leadership Kaua’i, managing and facilitating the progress of annual classes and programs, specializing in coaching young people for success, self-empowerment, conflict resolution, safety certifications and goal setting strategies.

Student Speaker, Deborah Ponce 

Debbie Ponce worked for Aloha Airlines for 18 years and Coco Palms for 10 years. After the closure of Aloha Airlines, she attended Kauai Community College with the help of a National Emergency Grant for displaced workers of Aloha Airlines. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society and served one term as Treasurer. Debbie earned an AAS in Accounting at KCC, with a GPA of 3.95, interning at the Kauai Community Federal Credit Union in the accounting dept. Debbie then transferred to UH West Oahu earning a Bachelor's degree with Distinction in Public Administration, with a GPA of 3.93, again interning at the Kauai Community Federal Credit Union in the Human Resource Dept. She starts her Masters in Human Resources at UH Manoa this Fall.

Student Speaker, Taylor Stanton

Taylor Stanton is a candidate for an Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts. While attending KCC, Taylor served as Vice President of the ASUH-KCC Student Government for the past two years, Secretary for the Radio Club, and reporter for Ka Leo O KCC. Taylor plans on transferring to the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Fall 2012 to pursue a degree in Economics, and plans on returning to Kauai to own a business.

Commencement to be Streamed Live

The KCC 47th Annual Commencement will be streamed live on the KCC Website, tomorrow, Friday, May 11th, starting at 6:00 p.m. Students receiving diplomas and certificates, notify your family and friends off-island (or even on-island!) that they can watch you in real time! Go to the KCC Website at 6:00 pm (HST) and the live feed will be in the "Spotlight" section. Click the squarish icon (similar to this) in the bottom right corner to see Commencement in full-screen mode. This new program is courtesy of Kent Tanigawa. Mahalo, Kent!

KCC Jazz Band Spring Concert! (5/12)

Come join us on Saturday, May 12th, at 7:00pm at the KCC-PAC for the Jazz Band Spring Concert! Kauai Voices (a new vocal ensemble) and the Duke Curlendo Quartet (Steve Dubey, Hank Curtis, Marty Leonard, & Mike Odo) will be starting off the concert. The concert is free. Donations to to the Larry MacIntosh Scholarship Fund are appreciated.
