This week the College has been involved in two exciting events that speak directly to two areas on which we've chosen to focus.

Internationalization

On October 12, 2009, Toyama National College of Maritime Technology and Kaua'i Community College signed an educational agreement to work together in ways that will be beneficial to both institutions. As the first project in this agreement, Toyama maritime students will come to Kaua'i CC to study Polynesian Navigation, Hawaiian culture, and English. A part of Toyama College's curriculum is studying modern navigation techniques. Intrigued by how Polynesians were able to navigate vast distances throughout the Pacific without the aide of modern navigation equipment, Toyama College students are eager to learn the treasured art of Polynesian navigation and voyaging. Dennis Chun (Instructor, Kaua'i CC) and Tomoki Oku (Associate Professor of Maritime Technology, Toyama College) are developing a program of study.

Sustainability

In partnership with the Kaua'i County Farm Bureau, KCC launched a new Community Market that includes Garden Island-grown fruits and vegetables, plus prepared foods and products made from local ingredients. Beginning this past Saturday, the 10th, the market will run weekly on the campus from 10-1. The market will also feature demonstrations and information about KCC programs. The market is envisioned as a central gathering place where neighbors can shop for food from the garden, enjoy delicious local foods, "talk story," learn more ways to cook and grow local ingredients, and connect directly with farmers from around the island on a regular basis.

Although the market launch was soggy, the turnout was good, and the Culinary students, along with Steve Nakata and Mark Oyama, did a terrific demonstration of cooking with local ingredients! Glenn Hontz and Kelly Ball were also on hand to give KCC garden tours and sell starts and garden produce. Other vendors included Hanalei Taro & Juice Co., fried green tomatoes and foods from the garden from Kaua'i Fruit & Flower Co., and a selection of fresh produce, cut flowers, plant starts, and value-added farm based products such as Moloa'a Bay Coffee and Kunana goat cheese.

We hope this weekend will be drier, but regardless, the market will go on!

Kaua`i CC Student Internships available

Cognition is a place on campus whose goal is to encourage both K-12 and college-level students in Science, Math, and Technology. We are looking for a limited number of currently enrolled Kaua'i Community College students who are interested in serving as student interns. Grant funds require preference to be given to students of Hawaiian, Filipino or Micronesian ancestry. Interns will be involved in various projects and serve as guides to groups of visiting K-12 students. If you meet these requirements and would like to apply for an internship, write a short essay on why a place like Cognition is important to you and/or our younger students, and submit academic transcripts to Brian Yamamoto in the Natural Science Building.

eCAFE Course Survey Informational Session

There is still time to register for the October 15 ITS Brown Bag broadcast focusing on the Instructor role in eCAFE. This will be your final opportunity to discuss aspects of the new online paperless course evaluation system directly with the eCAFE project manager Jennifer Geis prior to the end of the Instructor setup period for the current semester survey on October 29. The October 15 broadcast is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

While the focus of this session will center on the Instructor role in the survey process, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone who wishes to familiarize themselves with the workings of the innovative new paperless system through which students evaluate courses at the end of each semester. Jennifer will provide a detailed overview of how eCAFE works and answer questions specific to the Instructor portion of the eCAFE site.

Brown Bag presentations are broadcast live to HITS sites throughout the UH System and on UH Manoa’s Campus Cable TV channel 67. Reservations are required through the ITS training website: http://www.hawaii.edu/training

Opportunity to Show Off Our Stuff

As you all know, KCC, in partnership with the Kauai Farm Bureau, is launching a Community Market beginning this Saturday, October 10th from 10-1 on the front parking lot. Part of the idea of this market is to support local agriculture and highlight our involvement in agricultural training and sustainability. However, another reason we are partnering with the Farm Bureau to have the Market on our property is to give us an opportunity to show off our programs. And we want to involve as many of you as possible! There are several ways to be involved. You could sign up for a Saturday when you would give a tour of your program, or demonstrate some aspect of it. This could be a field experience for your students! Another way you can be involved is simply to have your materials available at the educational booth at the Market, so that those at the Market can find out about your program. For the Launch of the Market this Saturday our Culinary Dept will be giving a demonstration, and our Garden Training Program will be giving tours. How and when do you want to be involved? Let me know!

This workshop will be an introduction to the new Course Assessment Reporting Data (CARD) form. Bring your assessment plans to work on the CARD form in this workshop.

Achieving the Dream - Focus Group Training
Friday October 16 - 1:00-4:00 in Fine Dining
This workshop, a part of our Achieving the Dream initiative, will train participants in how to use focus groups for evaluation purposes. Yukiko Watanabe of UH Manoa will conduct the workshop.

How to Help Your Students Write

This brown bag seminar will cover:

1. How do I create a student writing assignment?
2. How do I help my students complete the writing assignment well?

KPD-KCC Police Explorers Program

• Learn about and train for a $50,000 a year job in Law Enforcement
• Help your island and community
• Be ready to pass the entry test when you are 20-1/2
• Receive training in CPR, First Aid, Criminal Law, Weapons, Traffic Control, and other police subjects
• Attend monthly training session on Saturdays
• Work 8 hours a month at the police station
• Earn the right to participate in Ride-Along with an officer
• Do community service projects

Minimum Qualifications:

• 16 through 20 years old
• H.S. Graduate or H.S. Student with a C or better grade average
• Desire to join a team and make a difference in the community
• Willingness to be a team player
