The PVAW Task Force will also be sponsoring a Red Flag Campaign on February 14-16 in the LRC Lobby area with our community partner, the YWCA of Kaua'i. It is similar to the Clothesline Event held in October. Instead of t-shirts we will have red flags and cards to decorate with messages relating to warning signs in relationships. The Red Flag Campaign draws attention to dating violence and what bystanders can do to help friends who may be involved in an abusive relationship.

Did you know that only 10% of students testing into MATH 22 will ever make it through college mathematics?
KCC Ohana, You are invited to a talk-story session with the Math Department and Jon Kalk. We will present data on how KCC math students do compared to national statistics. We will also offer some solutions to address this complicated math problem. In order to make a difference to those who tested into the lowest level of remedial/developmental math, we need to consider an alternative to how we do mathematics here at KCC.

Since math affects almost everyone here, as a prerequisite or program requirement, your valuable input will be much appreciated.

Energy Project Groundbreaking

The groundbreaking ceremony for our energy project with Chevron Energy Solutions will be on Wednesday, January 18th at 9:00 a.m. in the open field next to the tennis courts. Please join us next Wednesday and see Kahu Wayne Vidinha perform a traditional Hawaiian blessing for the project and hear what Chancellor Cox, Vice President Morton, and Chevron Energy Solution's Chief Financial Officer Teresa Mayer have to say about the impact this project could have on the operations of the campus. Light refreshments will be served in the Fine Dining room following the blessing.

Residential Aquaponics Workshop

Course Dates: January 14, 21, 28, & February 4^th, 2012; Saturdays from 1:30 – 5:30 pm

Duration of Training: 4 weeks training program, 1 day per week, 4 hours per session

Pre-requisite: A basic knowledge of aquaculture would be most helpful for this intermediate level course but not an absolute necessity. Recommended reading “Backyard Aquaculture in Hawaii, a practical manual by Dr. Jim Szyper”, prior to the course. This manual is free and can be download directly from your internet web browser or contact the instructor upon registration and he will sent you the file.

Course Location: KCC OCET Classroom Trade Technology Bldg, Rm 114

Cost: $225 per participant

Workshop Description

Aquaponics, also known as the integration of hydroponics with aquaculture, is gaining increased global attention as the fastest growing bio-integrated efficient intensive food production system.

Aquaponics serves as a model of sustainable food production by following certain principles:

· The waste products of one biological system serve as nutrients for a second biological system.

· The integration of fish and plants results in a polyculture that increases diversity and yields multiple products.

· Water is re-used through biological filtration and recirculation, a closed system.

· Local food production provides access to healthy foods and enhances the local economy.

Greenhouse growers and farmers are taking note of aquaponics for several reasons:

• Hydroponic growers view fish-manured irrigation water as a source of organic fertilizer that enables plants to grow well.

• Fish farmers view hydroponics as a biofiltration method to facilitate intensive recirculation aquaculture.

• Greenhouse growers view aquaponics as a way to introduce organic hydroponic produce into the marketplace, since the only fertility input is fish feed and all of the nutrients pass through a biological process.

• Food-producing greenhouses – yielding two products from one production unit – are naturally appealing for niche marketing and green labeling.

• Aquaponics can enable the production of fresh vegetables and fish protein in arid regions and on water-limited farms, since it is water re-use system.

• Aquaponics is a working model of sustainable food production wherein plant and animal agriculture are integrated and recycling of nutrients and water filtration are linked.

• In addition to commercial application, aquaponics has become a popular training aid on integrated bio-systems with vocational agriculture programs and high school biology classes.

Aquaponics can be set up indoors in small spaces as well as large commercial scale operations. Some of the most perceptible benefits include:

- Minimum water use

- 100% Organic

- Eliminate soil borne pathogens

- No pesticide used

- Do away with the need to plough the soil

- Stops backbreaking work of digging the soil and weeding

- Can produce fish and veggies for the family / grower all year round

- Working at waist level vs. bending or kneeling

- Can be integrated with other sustainable farming technologies

In this course, students will be presented with a variety of mini scale systems and methods.

The workshop will train participants in basic theory and designing along with hands-on assembly of a home scale system.

Prepares candidates for the following types of employment potentials:

-To design and assemble an aquaponics food production system with the potential to expand into an commercial operation

-To seek employment as an aquaculture/aquaponics technician

-To participate in a Farm Service Team delivering various forms of labor and management support to existing farms and agricultural enterprises

- Teachers can also be trained to apply small-scale aquaculture projects as powerful educational tools for middle to high school students. Students learn hands-on Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, Nutrition, Data collection, Statistics, Animal & Plant Relationship, Problem Solving Skills, Scientific Writing Skills, Construction & Plumbing Skills and much more through managing & maintaining a classroom aquaponics project. Spring 2012 Merit Scholarships Available

DEADLINE: Friday, January 13, 2012

Merit Scholarships are available for the Spring 2012 semester for students with exceptionally high cumulative grade point average (GPA).

ELIGIBILITY:

Be classified, new or continuing, enrolled half-time, resident student.

Earned and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 or higher for first-time freshman and at least 3.70 or higher for continuing students.

Priority for awarding would be given to full-time continuing students seeking their first college degree with the highest cumulative GPAs at the end of fall and spring semesters up to the maximum allocation.

AMOUNT OF MERIT SCHOLARSHIP:

UH merit scholarships will cover Kauai CC tuition charges, fees must be paid by you. The tuition grant or scholarship award will be prorated to cover your actual enrollment level and in some cases the amount may be capped for all students. The maximum award amount will not exceed the residential rate charged for 12 credits.

PERIOD OF AWARD:

UH Merit Grants or Scholarships are awarded for one academic semester. Summer assistance may be awarded to need-based students based on available funds. You must reapply each semester for the UH Merit Scholarship.

Lights on Rice Parade Thank You

Thank you so much for supporting Kaua`i Community College participation in the Lights on Rice Parade held on Friday, December 2, 2011. This year, ASUH-KCC teamed up with the Marine Core League to create the magical carnival float and advertise and support the annual Toys for Tots Drive for the less fortunate. With this in mind, students spent many days planning and assembling the design and lights along with practicing dance moves to complement the float. Their efforts paid-off indeed as KCC participants brought much joy and endless smiles to the throngs of on-lookers and spectators.

Start Your Holidays at the KCC Bands Concert

KCC Jazz Band and Concert Band will be performing this Friday, Dec 9th at the Performing Arts Center beginning at 7:00pm. The concert is free with a calabash at the door to benefit the Larry Macintosh Scholarship Fund. We'd love to have you join us!

The Jazz Band will perform first with some Big Band Favorites. Your's truly will seranade you with a few great songs too. The Concert Band will then put you in the Holiday spirit with some excerpts from The Nutcracker Suite. There will even be ballet dancing to complete the mood!

This past August, Dr. Tom Grollman, a semi-retired Kauai Orthopedic Surgeon, traveled with his son, Mac, Thatcher Magoun, also a semi-retired Kauai surgeon, and Thatcher's wife, Nina to Zambia, Africa. The presentation is a selected series of photographs documenting this unforgettable and intense African Safari experience.

The Importance of World Mindedness

The presentation is free and the community is invited to attend.

David J. Smith is the author of three best-selling children's books, If The World Were A Village, If America Were A Village, and This Child Every Child. If the World Were a Village, published in 2002, has sold about a million copies in North America, and has been translated in 21 languages other than English – including Chinese and Braille. This Child Every Child, a picture book for children about children’s rights, has been endorsed by UNICEF. Smith has spoken around the world at schools, colleges, bookstores, and professional meetings. More than a decade ago, Smith addressed about 600 teachers as the keynote speaker for a program for Hawaii teachers held at Kamehameha School. His presentation at KCC looks at the concept of world-mindedness and why it's so important for us and our children. He will also look at the idea of the "global village", and all the interesting and surprising things he has discovered in his research. He will show the animation of If the World Were A Village, which was produced for UNICEF's International Day of Children's Broadcasting, then talk about the books and answer questions. David Smith was KCC Chancellor Helen Cox’s ninth grade English teacher and the teacher she most credits for instilling her love of learning, literature, and writing.

Do you find yourself wondering how you can better engage your students? According to a paper presented at the University of Wisconsin's 22nd. Annual Conference on Distance and Learning, "There is mounting evidence that today's traditional students--those born after 1982--have a different relationship with information and learning than do previous generations, as a result of their access to the Internet and computer-enabled technologies."

If this is true, what are the implications for higher education? Does this mean we need to alter our approaches? If so, do we have the expertise and know-how? Do we know what works? Do we understand technological trends? Do we know what tools are available?

Please join me on Monday (11/28) from 12-1:15PM in LRC128 to talk about it. Topics that will be covered:

An overview of technological trends and the impact on higher education.
Basic concepts: Delivery and Consumption of Information.
How to better utilize Google@UH services.
Ways to incorporate technology without the steep learning curve or high cost.

I don't claim to be an expert in technology, but I am a proponent and prolific user. Although I have a planned agenda for the workshop, I'd like to keep the discussion open and informal, so please come with questions, concerns, ideas, and experiences. Hopefully we'll all leave better informed!

Although I don't need an exact headcount, I would like to get a sense of how many people are planning to attend--to ensure adequate resources are available. Please let me know (via email) if you're planning to attend. All are welcomed--instructional and non.

Remembering JFK Presentation by Dr. Bruce Getzan

November 22 is one of those "historical marker" days that many Americans know because they or their colleagues, friends, or family members can recall exactly where they were when they heard the news that shots had rung out in Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Kennedy is said to have cried out, "Oh No," the President's limousine sped off to Parkland Hospital, where the youngest man ever elected to our country's highest office was pronounced dead.

Join Dr. Bruce Getzan for a presentation and discussion on Tuesday, November 22, from 12:00 noon to approximately 1:00 pm in the Office of Continuing Education and Training Building (OCET), Room 106C/D, for "Remembering JFK". Bruce has taught several classes focusing on the JFK Presidency, researched and taken students to the Kennedy Library in Boston, to the Kennedy birthplace in Brookline, MA, and to Arlington National Cemetery.

His most popular class was a travel program to Dallas on November 22, with a guided tour of the Sixth Floor Museum, the grassy knoll, and a tour with a former mayor of Dallas and CBS reporters of Lee Harvey Oswald's escape route and arrest location. His students interviewed fifteen eyewitnesses to the murder and the man who was handcuffed to Oswald when Jack Ruby shot the alleged assassin.

Bruce will review a number of the essential resources, recent publications, video clips and his work on Theodore White's notes of the "Camelot" interview with Jackie Kennedy.

WHAT IS IT? Currently, there are 90 positions available in Hawai`i for college students and veterans from all disciplines who like to learn by serving in volunteer positions. If you are already working on your practicum, internships, Service learning projects, or just want to serve your country as an AmeriCorps member addressing local community issues, learning valuable civic and workforce skills, and aspiring to a lifetime of civic engagement, this is the program for you.

WHY: This is a great way to earn $1100-$2700.00 in an educational grant.

Kaua`i Recycles Day

The FENG 80 ZeroWaste Strategies class and ASUH-KCC will be hosting a recycling awareness fair on Tuesday, November 15, from 12-2pm in the Student Lounge. The Kaua`i Recycles event is part of a national America Recycles program to promote recycling in our community.

There will be information available about recycling on campus as well as a showing of the movie Tapped. Representatives from ZeroWasteKauai and the County Of Kaua`i Solid Waste Recycling Team will be present to share information on community recycling efforts. The goal of the fair is to raise the awareness in students and staff about recycling opportunities on campus and in our community. There will be free food, information tables, some give away prizes, and opportunities to learn the "how, what, and where" of recycling at KCC and on Kaua`i.

Vincent Itoga Fund for International and Arts Education

Friends,

We all know that Vinny was a rare and wonderful friend who loved art and culture and had a real appreciation for the world! As a way to honor Vinny and let his legacy remain with KCC, I have set up a Vincent Itoga Fund for International and Arts Education. The primary use for this fund will be to assist students to be able to study abroad, to have that glorious eye-opening experience that Vinny so cherished. Should there not be students who wish to travel, the fund will secondarily be used to develop the international partnerships necessary to support student study abroads and to support arts education on campus, because Vinny so loved literature, music, dance and the visual arts. I had the chance to let Vinny know about my intent of developing this fund and he smiled in approval.

If you would like to give a donation in Vinny's name, please make check out to: UHF-Kauai CC and include in the Memo Line: Vincent Itoga Fund. You can drop your donation into the Chancellor's Office mailbox or bring it up to the office.

Temporary Campus Entrance Change

Temporary modifications to the entrance going to / from Kaumualii Highway will begin this morning (Nov 3). The normal entry lane will be closed and the exit lane will be used for two-way traffic. The loop in front of the One Stop Center (OSC) will also be temporarily reversed. Drivers should plan to go slowly and obey all construction signs.

DV Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness month and Kauai CC's Preventing Violence Against Women (PVAW) Task Force has been working with the YWCA of Kaua'i and the County's DV Task Force on several activities listed on the attached flyer.

Coming up this Saturday, Oct 8, 1-3:00 p.m. is the Self Defense Seminar at the Convention Hall. It is open for both men and women. Contact Lianne, Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, 241-1745.

As educators, parents, neighbors, and friends we are the agents of social change in our community. Help to end the violence occuring on our island and in our community. According to recent KPD stats shared at a DV Task Force Meeting, family abuse calls are going up each month since July.

We would welcome instructors coming up with DV Awareness projects for students to earn extra credit on such as: poems, art work, music, essays, film critique, videos, posters, etc. Please help to build a stronger community by supporting the work that helps others to live a decent life.

IT Security Workshop – Mind Your Ps: Passwords, Piracy, and Phishing

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). This year marks the eighth year the United States federal government is promoting cyber safety awareness in their national campaign. The Department of Homeland Security has developed the "Stop. Think. Connect." campaign to engage and challenge us to practice and promote safe online practices.

In recognition of NCSAM, UH Information Technology Services will present a cyber security brown bags session, "Mind Your Ps: Passwords, Piracy, and Phishing", on October 11 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Kuykendall Hall on the Manoa campus. There has been an increase in compromised UH accounts, copyright violation notices (piracy) and phishing emails. In this session UH Information Security Officer Jodi Ito will discuss the problems, remediation efforts and outline strategies for protecting yourself online.

Adopt-A-School Day

The Hawaii Jaycees sponsors an annual event called "Adopt-A-School" Day. It is an opportunity for individuals or groups to provide volunteer assistance to schools in their communities. KCC's Pamantasan Club has been given the "go" by College Council to adopt our school for the day!

This Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011 from 8:30-10:30 ish club members will be cleaning up the area around the One Stop Center Bldg. and if you want to "Be the change you want to see in the world." KCC Blood Drive Mahalo!

Aloha Faculty and Staff,

Thank you so much for supporting the Kaua`i Community College Blood Drive held on Monday, October 3, 2011 at the Student Life Center. The time and effort required was substantial and is truly appreciated not only by the Hawaii Blood Bank, but by the many families whose lives are positively affected by the "Gift of Life" generated by the KCC Blood Drive.

A total of 144 individual appointments were recorded with 20 no shows. Out of the 100 pint goal, a total of 87 pints were collected. Of these participants, 25 were listed as first-time donors with 31 deferrals. Although we did not meet our 100 pint goal, we are proud to say that since each unit of whole blood can be separated into three components, as many as 261 lives can be saved as a direct result of KCC's efforts.

We extend our gratitude to all for helping to make this important community program a successful one. Your generosity, commitment, and leadership really do make a difference for our community. Many people are alive today because of your efforts.

Film Club screening: A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

Come one, come all! Thursday evening, October 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Tech 114 Multi-Purpose room, the KCC Film Club will be screening Stanley Kubrick's 1971 classic "A Clockwork Orange." Tell your students!
A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 film adaptation of Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel of the same name. It was written, directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick. It features disturbing, violent images, facilitating its social commentary on psychiatry, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian, future Britain.
Alex (Malcolm McDowell), the main character, is a charismatic, psychopathic delinquent whose interests include classical music (especially Beethoven), rape, and so-called 'ultra-violence'. He leads a small gang of thugs (Pete, Georgie, and Dim), whom he calls his droogs (from the Russian друг, "friend", "buddy"). The film chronicles the horrific crime spree of his gang, his capture, and attempted rehabilitation via controversial psychological conditioning. Alex narrates most of the film in Nadsat, a fractured adolescent slang comprising Slavic (especially Russian), English, and Cockney rhyming slang.
A Clockwork Orange features a soundtrack comprising mostly classical music selections and Moog synthesizer compositions by Walter Carlos. The now-iconic poster of A Clockwork Orange was created by designer Bill Gold. The film holds the Guinness World Record for being the first in media history to use the Dolby sound system.

Want to earn a scholarship voucher worth $1,175, $1,468, or $2,775 to help pay for your tuition or student loan? It is valid for 7 years. If you don't use it, you may award it to someone of your choice.
Are you doing a practicum, internship, student teaching hours, clinical hours, service learning, or are you volunteering in a non-profit organization and not receiving any pay (unless you are a Federal Work Study student)?
Are you enrolled at least 1/2 time?
Are you willing to conduct 300 - 450 hours of volunteer service in 1 year? Or 900 hours over 2 years?
Are you a US citizen, US national, or Legal permanent resident alien?If you answered "Yes" to these questions, you are eligible to enroll in the Students in Service Program!
Just 21 states are eligible to enroll in the Students in Service Program.

Blood Drive

The KCC Blood Drive is scheduled for Monday, October 3, 2011 from 8:45 to 3:30 in the student lounge. At our last blood drive we collected a KCC record breaking 111 pints. That's 333 lives saved thanks to our blood drive. Once again our goal is set at 100 pints and we would love to break our last record. For that to happen, we need your help. Blood donors are needed every day in Hawaii. For every pint of blood donated, up to three lives can be saved. All blood collected at our blood drive stays in Hawaii. Want to donate but can't due to health reasons? Food and beverage donations are always welcomed.

The KCC blood drive is known by many as the best blood drive on the island because we have a great environment, friendly faces, great food, and massages. That's right, Virginia and her massage students plan on being there to offer complimentary thank you chair massages to our donors.

Requirements for blood donations:

You must be healthy (no illness within 3 days of donating)
Must be at least 8 weeks after your last blood donation
Must be 18 or older (17 with parental consent)

To sign up to be a food or beverage donor, give me a call at the wellness center or send me an email and let me know what you plan on bringing. You do not need to provide enough for everyone because every little bit adds up.

RCAC seeking nominations for four seats on UH Board of Regents

HONOLULU (August 30, 2011) – Regents Candidate Advisory Council (RCAC) Chair Karl Fujii has announced the commencement of the fall recruitment process and encourages the submissions of nominations for the following four (4) seats on the University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents (BOR): City and County of Honolulu, Kauaʻi County, At Large and Student. These seats are currently occupied by Regents Dennis Hirota, Ramón de la Peña, Teena Rasmussen and Matthew Williams, whose terms will end on June 30, 2012.

As mandated by law, the RCAC must present the names of at least two finalists for each seat to the governor at least 120 days prior to the expiration of a term. Gov. Abercrombie's appointments from this list are subject to Hawaiʻi State Senate consent and confirmation and will serve for five years beginning July 1, 2012.

Except for the At Large seat, candidates for the City and County of Honolulu and the Kauaʻi County seats must be residents of that county. Candidates for the Student seat must be a student of the University of Hawaiʻi System at the time of initial appointment.

Application materials and procedures as well as complete descriptions of regent's responsibilities are available online at www.hawaii.edu/rcac or may be requested by calling (808) 692-1218 or email at borapp@hawaii.edu. Applications will be accepted through October 14, 2011.

Business Education Department Creates Sustainable "Library"

We have kept busy cleaning and purging in our Business Education Division building this summer, and we decided to re-use this old bookshelf and turn it into a sustainable reading area.

Everyone is welcome to take a book to read, leave a book to share, and help to recycle knowledge. Our sign says it all.

Mahalo for a very productive year. I know this was a difficult one--with pay cuts, budget cuts, fewer staff to cover the same work, high enrollment and a host of other stresses and strains. I want to thank you for making it a truly wonderful year, despite all these things. From the care taken of our physical campus to the financial stewardship activities, to the care and teaching of our students, all of you pulled together to make improve the lives of our students. In our small community each one of you makes a difference, and I appreciate each and every one of you--those who stay late to make sure things are done, those who come up with new, great ideas, those of you who put one step in front of the other to do good solid work, those of you who question what we are doing---all of you are valuable assets to our grand endeavor. For those of you who are leaving for the summer, please go safely and have a fulfilling summer whether that relaxing on a beach, climbing a mountain or playing with kids. For those of you who will still be here all summer, take a deep breath before jumping into summer tasks. For all of you, MAHALO!!

I will be on the mainland until the 25th seeing my son graduate with his Masters Degree from Arizona State and then hanging out with family for a few days. Before returning, John and I will go backpacking in the Utah desert to give our spirits and bodies new energy. I wish you all similar opportunities to enjoy family and recharge your batteries.

Congratulations to Maureen Tabura, who has been selected as the 2011-12 Community College Leadership Champion representative for Kaua'i Community College. CCLC was established in 2004 through the vision and sponsorship of Joyce Tsunoda and the many UHCC and community contributors to the Joyce S. Tsunoda Community College Leadership Development Fund. The Leadership Champions is comprised of representatives from the seven community colleges and the UHCC System Office, who share an interest in learning to be better leaders.

The mission of the University of Hawai'i Community Colleges Leadership Champions (CCLC) is to identify, encourage, develop, and support the next generation of community college leadership.
The Goals of CCLC are to:

The Kaua'i Beekeepers Association (KBee), will be hosting a public meeting on Friday April 15 at KCC in the Electronic and Technology Building's Multi- Purpose Rm114. The featured speaker will be Danielle Downey, the state's newly hired apiary specialist. The meeting will start at 6 pm with Danielle's presentation, and with a question and answer discussion to wrap up the evening's event.

Ms. Downey will be focusing her discussion on common honeybee diseases and how to identify, treat and prevent them from becoming problematic for beekeepers. A brief update on the state's plan for assisting local beekeepers and helping Kaua'i keep the small hive beetle and varroa mite off the Garden Island will be included in the discussion.

Danielle will also be making a presentation along with Jimmy Trujillo from the Kauai Beekeepers Association at the Kauai County Farm Bureau's Garden Fair on the following day April 16. Their mid-day presentation, titled "The Buzz about Beekeeping: Beekeeping Basics and How to Get Started" will be a lecture and demonstration on the methods, techniques and equipment necessary to start keeping bees for honey production or increased pollination for your farm or garden. KBee will also have a booth at the Garden Fair to share additional information on how to get involved and learn more about beekeeping on Kauai.

KCC EarthDay 2011

This year's Earth Day celebration will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Starting at 11 am and running throughout the day and into the evening, KCC will be hosting community groups and local vendors to create space on campus for the exchange of ideas, products and services related to environmental awareness, natural resource conservation, green economic development, alternative energy use, community and school gardens, and local produce and crafts. There will be music, food, an open mic, mini eco fashion show, and to finish the evening off, movies beneath the stars. It promises to be a full day of entertainment, information, and an excellent opportunity to learn, share, and participate in KCC's green evolution.

If you have a class, program, or service related to the environment or sustainability that you would like to promote we encourage you to contact us and we can reserve a table for you. Our 20 tables are filling up fast and we want to ensure that KCC's programs promote their upcoming classes and programs. Grant Work
Many of us at the College have been involved in writing grant proposals the past few weeks. A Title III Department of Education grant proposal, if successful, will support the College effort to provide effective curriculum and co-curricular support to potential and first year college students. Two Department of Labor grants proposals, if successful, will move forward courses in agriculture, business, energy, health and basic skills. It will be several months before we know proposals will be funded.

Partnerships
In the past week, we have strengthened two important partnerships with the College. First, I met with Dean Sylvia Yuen from the UH College of Tropical Agriculture to discuss ways we can provide strong pathways from KCC through the UH System. Second, the College hosted Robin Campaniano and Kay Fukunaga from the Ulupono Initiative. The Ulupono Initiative is social investment organization interested in improving the quality of life for island residents in three areas: more renewable energy, more locally produced food, and less waste. Robin and Kay spent an afternoon learning about our programs in agriculture, apiary, aquaculture, renewable energy, green construction, and more. When they left, they expressed interest in working with us on one or more projects in the future.

Performance
It’s once again time to look at our data to find out how we’ve been doing in areas such as enrollment, persistence, and granting degrees and certificates. On Wednesday April 13, at 2 pm in the Cafeteria, John Morton, Vice President for Community Colleges, will be on campus to discuss the data with us. A quick preview shows that we are doing well in some areas but not so well in others. For example, we are 66.5% above our current goal for Native Hawaiian enrollment and 85% above goal for the number of Pell financial aid recipients, but the percentage of Native Hawaiians persisting and earning degrees has dropped, as has enrollment of recent high school graduates. Analysis of this data will help us identify best practices and adopt new strategies in areas where we are weak.

Finally, a few thank yous. First, thank you for all the ongoing work being done on assessment and the accreditation self-study. This work provides us with a good picture of where we are and where we need to be. Second, thank you Kimo Perry and all those who worked so hard to make the Wai’ale’ale Project such a success its first year. Designed for students not considering college due to financial constraints, Wai’ale’ale students had a 71% success rate their first semester (overall GPA => 2.0), and 68% persisted to the next
semester. Given the background of these students this compares favorably to the success and persistence rate of the general student population. The success and persistence rate was even higher for Wai’ale’ale students who attended the Summer Bridge program or Introduction to College course. Finally, I want to offer a sincere mahalo to the students in Paul Hemmerla’s web design class, who took the time to evaluate our college website and provide constructive criticism on how to make it more dynamic and effective. I hope we will be able to implement some of their suggestions.

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Bernie Tsao earned a Bachelor's degree in Aquatic Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and completed a program of studies in Mechanical Design and Engineering at Santa Barbara Community College. He launched the Aquaculture Technology Training program at University of the Nations -Kona, Hawaii and served as director of the program for 11 years since 1990. Within a period of 20 years, he has trained and led aquaculture development teams to the Amazon basin in Brazil, Indonesia, Northern Thailand, Cambodia, Kingdom of Tonga, and Fiji where semi-intensive small-scale aquafarms were implemented for orphanages, rehabilitation shelters and rural village communities. He currently teaches part-time in the Food & Agriculture Career program at Kauai Community College and provides consulting & training programs on the development of aquaculture and aquaponics systems.

A Very Large Mahalo
On this bright and beautiful Friday morning in March, I want to take this opportunity to say a tremendous thank you to several of our campus community members that shepherded our campus through last night’s tsunami warning. My sincere and deep mahalo goes out to Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Gary Nitta who came to campus about 10 pm and stayed until about 8 am today to make sure evacuees who came
here were safe and secure. Assisting him were Pat Watase and campus security. Pat came in to assist Gary and stayed until morning. I apologize for not knowing who from security was on duty but that makes my thanks no less sincere! Also, Vice Chancellor for Student Services Earl Nishiguchi sent an email to all of our students and posted signs on campus informing them of the campus closure today. Faculty members Brian Yamamoto and Dennis Chun made sure that all of our exchange students from Toyama, Japan were evacuated quickly and effectively. Dennis hosted them in his home until they could return to their hotel rooms this morning.

We were fortunate that this event did not have any dire consequences for us here on Kaua‘i, but it could have, and the way in which our team worked together was outstanding. Interestingly enough, just yesterday we had a tabletalk exercise to practice how we would handle a campus emergency. It was gratifying both then and in the situation last night to see how KCC employees are willing to pull together, remain calm and do what needs to be done. Our response, coupled with the work done at the county and state level was effective.

I look forward to having the campus open again tomorrow, and I encourage us all to keep in our thoughts and prayers all those in Japan whose lives have been impacted.

Meet UHCC's International Education Specialists

Congratulations to all staff and faculty of Kauai Community College on an excellent start to the semester. The parking lots were full, students and faculty were excited about their classes, and the Natural Sciences Building was ready to go! This term we have several new employees, so be sure to take an extra minute to say hello and help them get settled in our ‘ohana. Despite all the good news, our enrollment is not as strong as we would like it. As of this morning, January 18, our enrollment is down just over 1% from last spring. Please do all you can to accommodate our students and help them feel welcome.

This week the UH System had our hearing with the SenateWays and Means Committee. President Greenwood made the presentation, and all the Chancellors and Vice Presidents were there to answer questions. The presentation went well but, of course, it is too early to know how UH will fare this year in the legislature. Next week, on January 21, we will be presenting the UH testimony to the House Finance Committee.

This past weekend, KCC hosted two important events on campus. First, I invited about 40 stakeholders in agriculture on Kauai to a 1½ day planning session facilitated by Donna Ching from the College of Tropical Agriculture at Manoa. It was an exciting and intense two days, designed to help KCC understand the vision the community has for our role to support the agricultural sector. Those of us from KCC who attended heard loudly and clearly that the community wants us to step up and provide additional resources to support agriculture, including certificates, degrees and demonstration projects. Once we have had a chance to look over the notes from the meeting, we’ll be moving forward. If you’d like to be involved in this effort and have not been contacted, please let me know.

The second event on campus was the Science Olympiad competition for middle and high school students. Students participating have the opportunity to go on to the statewide competition at Leeward Community College in March. The event was cosponsored by the American Association of UniversityWomen, KCC and the Science Olympiad program, now in its 27th year. Events such as these not only help these students develop STEM skills, but also introduce them to KCC.

Students from Toyama Lend a Helping Hand

The inaugural group of students from Toyama National College of Marine Technology visited Hawaii last March. As students who study modern navigation techniques they were stumped when asked the question, "So what is navigation?" by KCC professor Dennis Chun. With all the computers and precise instrumentation on modern ships, it wasn't a concept they had ever separated from those tools. The students spent time learning Polynesian Navigation, Hawaiian culture, and English. Among their many activities was helping with KCC's outrigger canoe project, interacting with various KCC students and organizations, and learning alongside others on the Big Island.

This March, we'll greet the next group of students from Toyama NCMT.　お楽しみに。

The University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program is requesting preliminary proposals for funding available beginning February 1, 2012 and ending January 31, 2014. Application deadline is Wednesday, January 19, 2011. A typical award is $30,000/year but may range from $10,000 to $60,000 inclusive of indirect costs. eWaste Recycling Quarterly Program Reminder

The first pickup period in 2011 for the Quarterly UH eWaste Recycling Program is fast approaching at the end of January. If you have UH-owned electronic equipment to recycle you should contact your campus coordinator as soon as possible; there is no charge for recycling, however the program is for UH equipment ONLY; no personal or public ewaste is accepted. "A Safer Learning Environment" College Discussion January 19th at 12:00

On Wednesday January 19th, Dr. Luoluo Hong, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UH Hilo will be giving a talk entitled "A Safer Learning Environment" at 12:00 in Technology 114. The presentation is scheduled for 1 hour, from 12:00 to 1:00, with another hour of discussion to follow from 1:00 to 2:00.

About the presentation:

Campus violence continues to be one of the most serious public health concerns facing college students. The incidents at Virginia Tech and other universities has increased our sensitivity to the issue, but what exactly can we do to decrease the likelihood of violence in our lives? Whether it is sexual assault, cyberstalking, domestic violence, or bullying, every member of the campus community has a role and responsibility to play in helping make a safer world for all. Please come join us for this provocative and interactive conversation about how we can all work together to end violence at Kauai Community College and beyond.

Martin Luther King Day Mural Project and Open Mic

There will be a Mural Project and Open Mic titled "Peace, Love, and Understanding," that will take place next Tuesday, January 18, from 12pm-2pm outside of the library. The idea for this project is to bring us all together as a campus and create an event that celebrates a great leader. I hope to have student and faculty participation to do readings and help fill in the sidewalk mural in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s message. The Open Mic participation is a way for spoken word artists and performers to speak out and express themselves about world peace, overcoming differences, and comment on our shared humanity.

Greetings from your new institutional researcher

Dear KCC Faculty and Staff:

I'm excited to begin my new role as institutional researcher for the college. I know I'll be spending a lot of my time working on reports that are necessary for accreditation. It's also my job to help everyone to obtain and analyze data and other forms of information. I'm hoping that better access to information will help everyone in their duties and decision-making.

So I'd like to start by asking you, what kinds of data would be useful for you?

Please email me with your requests. The more clearly you can phrase your question/request, the easier it will be for me to help you. Also, please note that privacy and confidentiality may prevent me from being able to fulfill certain requests. If your request involves information that pertains to someone else, I will have to get their permission before going ahead. For example, if a math instructor wants to know how students do in automotive classes after having taken math, that will require permission from automotive faculty before I can fulfill the request.

I can also help with designing surveys to gather information. I have already heard from some people who would like to do faculty/staff surveys to help with the accreditation self-study. For these, I'll be working with Anne and Bonnie to gather all the survey requests together so that we can minimize the amount of surveys that people have to fill out, and eliminate the repetition of questions. Please discuss your planned survey with me before the end of the Spring 2011 semester so that we can design them and be ready to administer them in the Fall. If there is a reason that your survey needs to be done sooner, we can work that out also.

In the future, I'll be developing material for an Institutional Research website. This will include a request form, and will allow you to look up key data for the college. You'll also be able to browse through past findings and reports from the IR office. For now, just email me if you have a request. I will aim to fulfill requests as soon as I can, but please allow for approximately two weeks in case I am busy with accreditation work or other requests, or it is a complicated project.

I'm looking forward to working with all of you, to see what we can learn from all the data generated by the college. Feel free to stop by my office in the OSC room 201/C, right next to Annie Rellin.

2011 EUTF Health Benefits Open Enrollment

The Hawai'i Employer-Union Health Benefits Trust Fund (EUTF) has announced its open enrollment period for January 3, 2011 through January 24, 2011. This is an opportunity for employees to make changes to their health benefit plans, if desired.

Plan changes during the open enrollment will be effective March 1, 2011.

The EUTF Trustees have approved new health plan premium rates, effective March 1, 2011 through June 30, 2011. The March 1, 2011 premium rates may be viewed at the EUTF website:

Employees desiring to make changes to their health benefit plans must complete the EC-1 Enrollment Form and submit to the Personnel by January 24, 2011, for processing and routing to the EUTF.

Section 2 – leave blank; only applicable for enrollments or changes made in the middle of a plan year due to a qualifying event.

Section 3 – any boxes left blank mean you have not selected the options, thereby waiving coverage.

Section 4 – when making health plan changes, complete Section 4 if enrolling dependents. If no dependents are listed, EUTF will assume you do not wish to cover any dependents.

Due to minimal changes to plan choices, the EUTF has not requested administrative time-off from the Governor for employees to attend the informational sessions. State employees are required to take vacation leave to attend the open enrollment informational sessions.

Thank you for your good work in 2010. I hope you had a wonderful, well‐earned holiday break and are now refreshed and ready to dive in again. As we leave the old year behind and greet 2011, let us remember why we are here and recommit to working together to serve our students and our island community. We have serious and difficult work ahead of us, but it is also joyful work that we can engage in with a great deal of fun and high spirits.

The following three questions should direct our work.

How does KCC make sure that all students have access to and opportunity for success in higher education?
How does KCC get Kaua‘i back to work now and create a workforce prepared to support tomorrow’s economy?
How does KCC lead Kaua‘i move into a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable future?

To address these questions we need to examine our current practices. After analysis of what works and what doesn’t, what we do well and what we need to do that we aren’t currently doing, we can then move forward. We can strengthen what works and innovatively seek new solutions where needed. Our assessment and APRU processes help guide us in this work. This spring we will be sharing our APRUs with one another and making decisions about future directions based on that information. We will also be working on an institutional self‐evaluation in preparation for aWASC accreditation visit.

This will be an exciting semester, for sure! Mahalo for your part in making it a successful one.

College Conversation Reminder

Reminding everyone that there will be a College Conversation at Fine Dining on Friday, December 3rd. Due to Helen's tight schedule on Friday, the Conversation will begin at 1:30 pm rather than at 1:00 pm as originally planned. The College Council meeting will follow at 3:00 pm at Fine Dining.

The topic of conversation will be: how we can better serve our Hawaiian students. Representatives from Makaloa will be attending. As many of the faculty members will be at J.N.'s campus visit, faculty are encouraged to voice their ideas and opinions on this topic by emailing me.

Welcome to the Gecko

Kaua`i CC is the recipient of a ""gecko" sculpture created by artist Patrice Federspiel and donated by Kapiolani Women's Center in Honolulu.

In 2004, Ms. Federspiel had the honor of being one of 50 artists chosen to participate in Honolulu's "Geckos in Paradise" sculpture competition and exhibit. Patrice's gecko sold for $10,000 in the charity bidding to raise money for breast cancer research.

Come by the Chancellor's Office, where it temporarily sits, and see the colorful, whimsical sculpture.

KCC with Kauai Backstory Presents Reading on Campus - November 22nd

Writers and Visual Arts artists at KCC! You are invited to read/present that evening. You will take turns, on a first-come, first served basis. Plan on a 5-minute session!

Who/What is Kauai Backstory? This is a venue for rigorous writing and thoughtful images with a view about Kauai. Year-round, an on-line literary journal is featured and welcomes high-quality writing and images from the public. Expression of all voices, images, and words are celebrated. Kauai Community College in partnership with the Tobacco Free Kauai (TFK) Coalition will take part in the 35th American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout to encourage smokers to make a plan to quit and to provide resources for smokers to know where to go for help on and off-campus. KCC Faculty and Students in "Peter Pan" - Opening November 12!

KCC faculty and students have partnered with Hawaii Children's Theatre in presenting "Peter Pan" at the War Memorial Convention Hall for three weekends, starting November 12. With a full orchestra, elaborate sets and costumes, and technical wizardry (including characters "flying"), it is sure to be entertaining.

Tickets are available at the door for $15. (There's a $6 special matinee on 11/14 with a food bank donation.)

KCC's own Nina Saraos is the musical director--and she is amazing! Psychology instructor and MUS 203-G student Laura Haack is in the orchestra, along with KCC MUS 203-G students Loren Kayfetz, Edward Bittner, Terumi Nakagawa, Joan Yamaguchi, Dennis Haack, Larry McCreery, Thelma Chun, and Bob Merkel. (Judy Toy's husband, Barry, director of the KCC Stage Band, is also playing in the show.)

Liberal Arts student Dexter Oliver is in the cast, along with Chris Tennberg's daughter Paris, Liberal Arts student Michael Buencosejo's daugther Karmela, and my daughter Athena.

Mary Alexander, member of our Language Art & Humanities division said, "The production of a musical is a culmination and celebration of some of the finest things that our division is about: literature and its interpretation; music and its performance; speech and its articulation, delivery, and projection. I hope you can come out and celebrate the arts! Hope to see you at the show!"

Laulima Basics workshop 11/10 @ 12:00

There will be a Laulima basics workshop next Wednesday, 11/10 from 12:00 to 1:00 in the computer lab in LRC 124. The workshop is meant for people with limited to no experience with Laulima, and will cover the use of common tools such as discussion, quizzes and the gradebook, and will focus on how to use Laulima to increase communication with students.

Let me know if there is something specific you would like me to cover, and I will prepare that for the session.

I am also planning an advanced session on how to customize Laulima- details will follow once arrangements have been made.

Voter registration tables and information will be there to assist in registering voters. Today is the last day to register for this November's general election.

KCC Health Emergency Procedures

KCC Ohana,

There have been several health emergencies this year that have taken place on campus. We at the Wellness Center are here to help in times of need. An emergency can happen when it is least expected so it's always better to be prepared. Here are a few things to remember should another emergency happen on campus near you.

Severe emergencies: unconsciousness, seizures, chest pains, allergic reactions, having a hard time breathing or any emergency that you would call 911 for should it happen in your own home:

Immediately call 911 (9-911 if calling from a campus land line). After calling 911, inform someone in the business office of what's happening so they are prepared when the emergency vehicles arrive and can point them in the right direction.
After calling 911, call the CWC (245-8307). The CWC team will be sent to render first aid and assessment while emergency vehicles are in transit.
Clear the area of people and debris to ensure ventilation, safety and direct access to the person in need.
DO NOT MOVE THE PERSON unless the person is in a building that needs to be evacuated or is in a spot that puts him/her in danger. When moving a person, make sure they are completely supported and only move them as far as they need to be secure.
If dealing with multiple people, make sure to tell the 911 dispatcher how many people are affected.

Not feeling well; dizzy/faint/nauseated feeling, injuries (foot/legs, major cuts):

Call the CWC (245-8307). The CWC team will be sent to your location to pick up and/or assess the person in need.
DO NOT have the person in need walk to the CWC even if escorted. Walking may increase symptoms the person is feeling which may cause them to fall/faint and injure themselves.

Injuries; cuts finger, and minor injuries that need cleaning and bandaging:

Have the person apply pressure (use gloves if you need to assist) and if possible have them hold the injury above the heart.
If they are able to walk, have them escorted to the CWC. If feeling lightheaded or unable to walk, Call the CWC (245-8307) to bring a wheelchair and assess the medical need.

Other illness:

Have the person come to the CWC.

Instructors and staff should be prepared for unexpected emergencies. Carry your cell phone and if you have not already done so, program the campus emergency contact numbers* into your contacts so you will have it should you need medical assistance. It will save you time. If you do not own a cell phone, print off the emergency contact numbers and tape them to an item you bring daily to class. It is also important that you know where the nearest phone/emergency phone is located.

Celebrate Banned Books Week 9/26-10/2/2010 by reading a Banned Book!

Banned Books Week actually celebrates the Freedom to Read and the First Amendment, which states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Book bannings and challenges did not stop with the Nazi book burnings; the Harry Potter series, the
Twilight series, and even the Captain Underpants series have come under attack.
People usually challenge books out of an attempt to protect readers, often children, from perceived harmful or disturbing material. The motivating factors, according to the ALA, are family values, religion, political views, and minority rights. (www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/banned/)
But in the words of Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas ("The One Un-American Act." Nieman Reports , vol. 7, no. 1, Jan. 1953, p. 20):

Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions.

It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us.

Therefore: Take a stand for Intellectual Freedom and READ A BANNED BOOK!!
